language teaching?
Hadise Cheraghi
Since social media has expanded and become an integral part of people’s daily life,
organizations, companies, institutes and even ordinary people are trying to communicate
with their contacts in this way.
Among these interactions, we encounter an emerging phenomenon called
microblogging.
What is microblog?
They are contents which are designed for quick audience interaction.
These contents could be in the form of text, photo, video and even podcast.
There are many types of microblogging platforms:
Instagram: This platform allows users to share their content is visual form.
Pinterest: It is an image sharing platform which allows company and individuals link to
products, articles and ideas to audience.
Facebook: Facebook is one the most effective microblogging platform since it allows
users to share texts, live videos, stories to connect their audience.
Twitter: This platform is famous for its shorts posts which are limited to just 280
characters.
Microblogging in second language learning
Traditional methods of language learning are becoming obsolete. Today, people do
most of their work through technology so traditional methods are time consuming
less effective.
Busy people are looking for a way to learn fast because time is of the essence for
They do not want to spend a lot of time getting ready, getting a car and going to
classes.
How can microblogging be useful in language teaching?
We are living in a technological revolution. Technology could sometimes hurt us and
sometimes it teaches us a lot.
People like to share their routines and opportunities in a digital form.
Some people would like to share their language learning experience through
Passive inputs such as texts, lectures and videos are no longer of interest to learners.
Active methods are more popular among students today.
Learners can express themselves more in this way and also have more interactions
each other.
It should be noted that not all content is necessarily relevant to the
audience.
Process pf language learning through this way must be attractive and fun to
learners. Content that are generated for language teaching through microblogging
could be in various formats such as photo, video, text and content.
Contents that are produced in addition to the validity of content, must be easy to
use, up to date, short but useful and have visual and audio appeal.
Contents must cover all language skills
Language has four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing which allow us to
comprehend, produce and use language effectively.
The content provider must take these four skills into account and do not prefer either to the
other.
Reaching a good language level requires to understand and to produce it so it is necessary
to teach and develop all the for language in the audience.
Conclusion
Learning through the microblogging is not limited to just social media. Because
interactions are not just limited between provider and learners. All audience are involved.
These interactions would remain. People take them out of social media. Out of the social
media people continue to discuss with their friends, colleagues or even a stranger about
the topic for more information.
Thank you
