■ Definition
– It refers to mechanized and automated devices that performers
various assembly tasks in an assembly line or cell
■ Automated assembly systems should be implemented when
– High product demand
– Stable Product design
– A limited number of components in the assembly (Maximum around
dozen)
– The product is designed for automated assembly.

■ Automated assembly systems combine multiple components in to single
entity.
■ It can be final product or subassembly.
■ Following are typical subsystems in assembly automation
■ One or more workstations at which assembly steps are accomplished
■ Part feeding devices that delivers individual components to workstations
■ A work handing system for assembled system

■ Selector or/and Orientor
■ Selector is a device that acts as a filter, permitting only parts in the
correct orientation to pass through.
■ Orientor is a device that allows properly oriented parts to pass through,
and reorients parts that are not oriented properly

■ Feed track
■ Moves components from hoppers & part feeders to the location of assembly
work head, maintaining proper orientation of the parts during transfer

■ Escapement
■ Removes components from feed track at time interval that are consistent
with the cycle time of assembly head
■ Placement
■ Physically places components in the correct location at the workstation for
an assembly operation.
