Hand Tools and Equipment in Illustration
A tool is a handheld device that aids in accomplishing a task. A tool
can be any item that is used to achieve a goal. Equipment usually denotes a
set of tools that are used to specific objective. To complete illustration
works, it is important to have a toolkit that should contain all of the
necessary tools. As you gain experience, you will learn which tools are
available for different types of jobs. Hand tools and equipment can be
grouped into these two categories:
7
 Hand or Manual Illustration Tools
 Digital Illustration Tools
 Hand or Manual Illustration Tools
A hand tool is any illustration tool that is powered by hand rather
than motor or any electrical devices. This includes:
 Drawing Pencils
Pencil is a basic instrument for any graphic course. It
is made of wood, has the form of cylinder or
hexagonal.
Drawing Pencil
 Erasers
Eraser is used to clean unnecessary marks. Sometimes
it is difficult to rub certain marks, so you must use
eraser as less as possible. Here are some examples of
eraser: rubber eraser, kneaded eraser, gum eraser and
vinyl or plastic eraser.
Eraser
 Ruler
A ruler is possibly one of the most important pieces of
the drawing tools. Ruler is used to measure lengths
and to draw straight lines.
Ruler
 Papers
Paper is a material made of cellulose pulp derived
mainly from wood, rags or certain grasses. Paper can be
smooth or coarse. With smooth paper, we can draw in
greater detail and smaller shapes, while using rough
paper will add a textured effect
Paper
 Compass
Compass is used to draw circles and arcs, and used to
transfer measures to drawing. It has two articulated arms
on the extremes. One of the extremes is a needle, which
you fix on the paper in the center of the arc that you
want to draw. On the other end is where you attach a
pencil to draw circles. Compass
8
 Masking Tape
Masking tape is used to secure the paper to the drawing
board. It is a sticky paper tape which is made of thin and
easy to tear paper and easily released pressure-sensitive
adhesive.
Masking Tape
 Drawing Board (also known as drawing table)
Drawing board (also known as drawing table) is
a kind of multipurpose which can be used for
any kind of drawing, writing or impromptu
sketching on a large sheet of paper or for
reading a large format book or other oversized
document or for drafting precise technical
illustrations.
Drawing Board
 Coloring Materials
Coloring materials are used to give life into your
drawings. There is a wide variety of coloring
medium: oil pastel, watercolor, acrylic paint and
charcoals.
Coloring Materials
 Sharpener
A sharpener is used for sharpening a pencil
whenever it shows sign of dullness.
Sharpener
 Triangular Scales
Its main purpose is to reproduce the dimension in
full size or to reduce or enlarge them on a drawing.
Scales help a drafter keep the proportions accurate
Triangular Scales
9
 Divider
Drawing instrument is used when transferring
measurement and dividing lines and arcs into the desired
number of equal parts.
Divider
 Protractor
Is used to form angles that cannot be made with the
triangles. Angles from 0 degrees to 180 degrees are
marked on the semicircular edge.
Protractor
 Scanner
An electronic device that generates a digital
representation of an image for data input to a
computer.
 Digital Illustration Tools
Digital drawing refers to drawing or illustration which is created
using graphics software. Instead of using a pencil and paper, digital
artists draw with a tablet or a computer, along with the device such as
mouse or a stylus. This includes:
 Drawing Tablet
A drawing tablet is a standard tool that every digital artist has in his
toolkit. A normal mouse is not capable enough to draw intricate
patterns. On top of that, they do not have pressure sensitivity which is
an essential part of making art digitally. Drawing tablets gives you full
control and feels as natural as drawing with a pencil.
*Drawing tablets come in two variants
1. With Screen- also called pen monitor/display tablet
2. Without screen- drawing pad or Pen tab
Tablet with Screen Tablet without Screen
Scanner
10
 Stylus
It is used to draw or make selections by tapping, on
devices with touchscreens such as tablet, computer and
mobile devices. A stylus is a pen-shaped object that you
can use to draw on the surface of your tablet. You can
use it just like a pen, pencil or brush. A stylus will help
you get the most out of your iPad or tablet or
smartphones. Stylus
 Drawing Software
The next most important tool for a digital artist is drawing software.
They are programs that are specifically made for making digital
paintings. Photoshop is the industry standard when it comes to drawing
software but it can be a little expensive. There are other alternatives in
the market such as Krita, Clip studio paint, and Corel Draw.
Adobe Photoshop Corel Draw Krita Clip Studio Paint
 Powerful Computer
An average computer works fine enough for digital painting. Issues
start to appear when you are working on a large canvas size using
heavily stylized brushes. Very often you will find the computer freezes up
or crashes the software. It may also result in a huge slowdown of the
computer where every single stroke appears a few seconds after you
draw them. Getting a good computer solves all these issues.

Hand Tools and Equipment in Illustration A tool is a handheld device that aids in accomplishing a task. A tool can be any item that is used to achieve a goal. Equipment usually denotes a set of tools that are used to specific objective. To complete illustration works, it is important to have a toolkit that should contain all of the necessary tools. As you gain experience, you will learn which tools are available for different types of jobs. Hand tools and equipment can be grouped into these two categories:
  • 13. 7  Hand or Manual Illustration Tools  Digital Illustration Tools  Hand or Manual Illustration Tools A hand tool is any illustration tool that is powered by hand rather than motor or any electrical devices. This includes:  Drawing Pencils Pencil is a basic instrument for any graphic course. It is made of wood, has the form of cylinder or hexagonal. Drawing Pencil  Erasers Eraser is used to clean unnecessary marks. Sometimes it is difficult to rub certain marks, so you must use eraser as less as possible. Here are some examples of eraser: rubber eraser, kneaded eraser, gum eraser and vinyl or plastic eraser. Eraser  Ruler A ruler is possibly one of the most important pieces of the drawing tools. Ruler is used to measure lengths and to draw straight lines. Ruler  Papers Paper is a material made of cellulose pulp derived mainly from wood, rags or certain grasses. Paper can be smooth or coarse. With smooth paper, we can draw in greater detail and smaller shapes, while using rough paper will add a textured effect Paper  Compass Compass is used to draw circles and arcs, and used to transfer measures to drawing. It has two articulated arms on the extremes. One of the extremes is a needle, which you fix on the paper in the center of the arc that you want to draw. On the other end is where you attach a pencil to draw circles. Compass
  • 14. 8  Masking Tape Masking tape is used to secure the paper to the drawing board. It is a sticky paper tape which is made of thin and easy to tear paper and easily released pressure-sensitive adhesive. Masking Tape  Drawing Board (also known as drawing table) Drawing board (also known as drawing table) is a kind of multipurpose which can be used for any kind of drawing, writing or impromptu sketching on a large sheet of paper or for reading a large format book or other oversized document or for drafting precise technical illustrations. Drawing Board  Coloring Materials Coloring materials are used to give life into your drawings. There is a wide variety of coloring medium: oil pastel, watercolor, acrylic paint and charcoals. Coloring Materials  Sharpener A sharpener is used for sharpening a pencil whenever it shows sign of dullness. Sharpener  Triangular Scales Its main purpose is to reproduce the dimension in full size or to reduce or enlarge them on a drawing. Scales help a drafter keep the proportions accurate Triangular Scales
  • 15. 9  Divider Drawing instrument is used when transferring measurement and dividing lines and arcs into the desired number of equal parts. Divider  Protractor Is used to form angles that cannot be made with the triangles. Angles from 0 degrees to 180 degrees are marked on the semicircular edge. Protractor  Scanner An electronic device that generates a digital representation of an image for data input to a computer.  Digital Illustration Tools Digital drawing refers to drawing or illustration which is created using graphics software. Instead of using a pencil and paper, digital artists draw with a tablet or a computer, along with the device such as mouse or a stylus. This includes:  Drawing Tablet A drawing tablet is a standard tool that every digital artist has in his toolkit. A normal mouse is not capable enough to draw intricate patterns. On top of that, they do not have pressure sensitivity which is an essential part of making art digitally. Drawing tablets gives you full control and feels as natural as drawing with a pencil. *Drawing tablets come in two variants 1. With Screen- also called pen monitor/display tablet 2. Without screen- drawing pad or Pen tab Tablet with Screen Tablet without Screen Scanner
  • 16. 10  Stylus It is used to draw or make selections by tapping, on devices with touchscreens such as tablet, computer and mobile devices. A stylus is a pen-shaped object that you can use to draw on the surface of your tablet. You can use it just like a pen, pencil or brush. A stylus will help you get the most out of your iPad or tablet or smartphones. Stylus  Drawing Software The next most important tool for a digital artist is drawing software. They are programs that are specifically made for making digital paintings. Photoshop is the industry standard when it comes to drawing software but it can be a little expensive. There are other alternatives in the market such as Krita, Clip studio paint, and Corel Draw. Adobe Photoshop Corel Draw Krita Clip Studio Paint  Powerful Computer An average computer works fine enough for digital painting. Issues start to appear when you are working on a large canvas size using heavily stylized brushes. Very often you will find the computer freezes up or crashes the software. It may also result in a huge slowdown of the computer where every single stroke appears a few seconds after you draw them. Getting a good computer solves all these issues. Computer
