COURSERA: INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEMS ENGINEERING MODULE 2
ASSIGNMENT 2:
Assume that the owners of the Domestic Dwelling are a newly married couple, who wish to have three or
four children in a few years, and then plan to have one set of parents live with them in about ten years.
Their limited budget and the available block of land will only allow them to build a single storey house
that can accommodate the couple and perhaps three small children in the first instance. The couple are
confident, however, that they can save enough money in the first five years to be able to add a second
storey when the time comes.
What issues need to be addressed in the design of the building to meet the couple’s future intentions?
The following questions need to be asked:
1. Where is the location of the house?
1.1 Beach Front?
1.2 Residantial area?
1.3 Inner city area?
1.4 High country?
2. What is the foundation of the soil characteristics?
2.1 Hard soil?
2.2 Soft Soil?
2.3 Any past construction?
3. The house will need a solid foundation to accommodate the double storey.
3.1 Solid frame with a single storey structure made for a double
3.2 Budget restricition: Reduce the number of room
3.3 2 bedroom house at first to meet budget restriction
4. Children Planning:
4.1 Plan to spread the children over 5 years
4.2 One child in the first year/ second after 2 years etc
4.3 Use the children’s room as a bunk bed setup
5. Construction:
5.1 Which requirements are unique to the people?
5.2 Floor planning for a 2 bedroom house at first with a strong foundation
5.3 Backyard space?
5.4 Pool Space for the future?
6. Future planning
6.1 Double strorey plan
6.2 Room for the plumbing and electrical allowance
6.3 Council approval to build higher raise
6.4 Roof planning for a high rise
7. Utilisation phase:
7.1 How long will the upgrade last
7.2 How long will the Parents live in
7.3 What will happen once the parents move out?
7.4 Spare room?
8. Retirement:
8.1 How long will the couple live in the house
8.2 are they planning to use it as an investment
8.3 Will it be demolished for a new block
8.4 Will it be sold?
These are the main question relating to the PLC of the dwelling house.
