McCarthyism: the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, secret bad behavior, or treason (attempting to overthrow the government) without actually having evidence that proves the people did it. This refers to something that happened IN the U.S. from about 1950 to 1956. It happened all over the country, but much of these happenings were led by a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, named Joseph McCarthy. Support for these kind of agttacks faded, and on December 2, 1954, the Senate voted to censure (say officially he had officially mis-behaved) Senator McCarthy by a vote of 67 to 22, making him one of the few senators ever to be disciplined in this fashion. McCarthy died in Bethesda Naval Hospital on May 2, 1957, at the age of 48 from the disease Hepatitis.
