C4DUdG and MOOCs: Why are we here?
MOOCs: How come we're here?
• Early adopters of MOOC consumption and creation
• Jumped into (were thrown and fell into) the wagon of MOOC
culture
• Has seen the birth of interactive computing (well... rather only MD)
• Have seen the birth of the Internet and personal computing
• Computational chemists, scientists 2.0
• Enthusiasm for innovative forms of learning, open knowledge
• Think of MOOCs as a form of Science Dissemination and Public
Outreach
C4DUdG and MOOCs: Why are we here?
• 1.Find an enticing subject
• 2.Have an expertise on the contents
• 3.Think about tentative audience
• 4.Know regulations applying
• 5.Set your course within a broader project
• 6.Choose a suitable platform
• 7.Assign various Open Educational Resources to each submodule
• 8.Reuse own existing resources and those (open!) from others

Online course via Moodle: 23 keys to organize a MOOC, to be successful and to actually enjoy it
• 14.Evaluate student progress with intention
• 15.Mix test, p2p and other tests in equilibrium
• 16.Use proactively social networks
• 17.Organize hangouts/Q&A sessions, and discussions on the Net
• 18.Publish an attractive promotional videoclip

MOOCs4ALL: about the project, on first tasks
There are five partners: collaboration is held over the Internet. Coordinator: Brian
Mulligan, IT Sligo
Two face-to-face meetings held so far: kick off in TU Delft, 2nd in Bath Spa.
Forthcoming: meeting in Girona (2nd phase preparation, leveraging a bunch of
low-cost MOOCs)
Managing an European project is always a complex task!
What does low-cost mean? 3 key words: Time, Energy, Budget
MOOCs4ALL: about the project, on first tasks
The team is rather heterogenous (which is positive)
IT SLigo has broad experience in delivering online courses, with actual
institutional support. On the contrary, UdG does not have much interest yet in
MOOC delivery, so our research group faces somes issues (yet no barriers)
Advantages: being different in nature, we learn from each other. TU Delft has a
big adventure with edX. The Bielefeld team has a very good expertise on video
production, therefore may provide valuable clues for streamlining MOOCs and
allowing for low-cost.

MOOCs4ALL: about the project, on first tasks
What have we learnt so far in the Project?
Low-cost production of MOOCs has not attracted enough interested people yet.
But it will.
Language may still be a barrier for tentative low-cost organizers which are not
fluent with English (what about internationalization?)
Fear of technology may be still present
MOOCs may not be strategic enough in face-to-face, classical universities
The metaMOOC may lack some marketing and appeal. 2nd edition will be better
@miquelduran @c4dudg @silviasimonr ACEFIR 30/4/2015
Four different experiences, four MOOCs
• Communicating Science 2.0.1: keys for a digital society (MiriadaX platform), 2013
and 2015
• History of Chemistry: from subatomic particles to macromolecules (MiriadaX
platform), 2013 and 2015
• Magic, Science and Confessable Secrets (currently in production, to be delivered
through MiriadaX), 2015
• University entry-level Chemistry (Currently in the planning phase, in Catalan), 2015
• Introduction to advanced chemical catalysis and molecular modeling (Future
consideration, in English)
@miquelduran @c4dudg @silviasimonr
Science Communication 2.0.1
MiriadaX Spring 2013 and 2015 (Spanish)
• Almost 25% completion rate
• Awesome experience
• Started from a doctoral-level area-independent course
• Specific target: graduate students, junior researchers
• This MOOC was produced almost on the spot

A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs:
The GISOLR Initiative
Girona Science Open Learning and Research
Our group is composed of active scientits, partially convinced of the key role of
Open Knowledge pursuit.
Open Access is still quite limited in the field of Chemistry, so working on Open
Science will help to mimic publishing trends in Physics and other disciplines
MOOCs are a way of fostering Open Knowledge
A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs:
Is the Wikipedia model suitable for MOOCs?
In MOOCs you have at least
- Content
- Learning flux / Pedagogial approach
- Actual user/student track
- Social&academic interaction (forums, social networks)
Content might be organized in a similar way to Wikipedia.
Learning might be organized as Wikitexts/Wikiprojects.
A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs:
On the language of MOOC delivery
Indeed major languages (English, Spanish, ...) are used in MOOCs. However,
there are at least two specific areas for use of local or minority languages:
- Connection with preuniversity level
- Developing countries
A very good example of using a multilanguage, interconnected information
platform is Wikipedia. We might mimic it.
A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs:
Indeed one should solve the problem of fake identity and improve remote
assessment. We are imagining new (low-cost) ways like
- Moebius-like MOOC: sequential student-instructor-student
- Quantum MOOC: synchronous student-instructor
A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs:
Wikiloc-like MOOC: following and registering running/mth-like tracks: different
speeds, different capacities, different muscles
A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs:
And last but not least:
MOOCs as science communication (flipped?)
A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs:
We should not expect teachers and researchers to use the low-cost approach as a
driving force
Tentative MOOC organizers should be motivated by organization and peers. The
low-cost approach should catalyze entering the MOOC world.
Thank you very much!

  • 18. MOOCs4ALL: about the project, on first tasks What have we learnt so far in the Project? Low-cost production of MOOCs has not attracted enough interested people yet. But it will. Language may still be a barrier for tentative low-cost organizers which are not fluent with English (what about internationalization?) Fear of technology may be still present MOOCs may not be strategic enough in face-to-face, classical universities The metaMOOC may lack some marketing and appeal. 2nd edition will be better

  • 26. A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs: The GISOLR Initiative Girona Science Open Learning and Research Our group is composed of active scientits, partially convinced of the key role of Open Knowledge pursuit. Open Access is still quite limited in the field of Chemistry, so working on Open Science will help to mimic publishing trends in Physics and other disciplines MOOCs are a way of fostering Open Knowledge
  • 27. A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs: Is the Wikipedia model suitable for MOOCs? In MOOCs you have at least - Content - Learning flux / Pedagogial approach - Actual user/student track - Social&academic interaction (forums, social networks) Content might be organized in a similar way to Wikipedia. Learning might be organized as Wikitexts/Wikiprojects.
  • 28. A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs: On the language of MOOC delivery Indeed major languages (English, Spanish, ...) are used in MOOCs. However, there are at least two specific areas for use of local or minority languages: - Connection with preuniversity level - Developing countries A very good example of using a multilanguage, interconnected information platform is Wikipedia. We might mimic it.
  • 29. A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs: Indeed one should solve the problem of fake identity and improve remote assessment. We are imagining new (low-cost) ways like - Moebius-like MOOC: sequential student-instructor-student - Quantum MOOC: synchronous student-instructor
  • 30. A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs: Wikiloc-like MOOC: following and registering running/mth-like tracks: different speeds, different capacities, different muscles
  • 31. A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs: And last but not least: MOOCs as science communication (flipped?)
  • 32. A few stormy ideas on our future with MOOCs: We should not expect teachers and researchers to use the low-cost approach as a driving force Tentative MOOC organizers should be motivated by organization and peers. The low-cost approach should catalyze entering the MOOC world.
