Rotation and Revolution
The EARTH IS UNIQUE
Earth has life.
Earth is called as blue
planet
Its called as because
three parts of the earth
is filled with water.
Water is the essential
thing for the living
things to survive
Earth has atmosphere
Earth is surrounded by atmosphere
Air that we breathe is from the
atmosphere
Atmosphere blocks harmful rays from
sun
Beyond atmosphere there is no air
So because of water and atmosphere
living things are surviving on earth.
The distance from sun
The nearest heavenly body
to the Earth is moon.
The sun is very far away
from earth but it gives right
amount of light and heat.
So that the plants , animals
and people can live here
The shape of the
earth
Shape of the earth is
sphere
anyone travelled
to the edge of the
earth they would
fall off
many years ago people
used to think that the
earth flat and that if
Earth is spherical
slightly flat at the
top and bottom.
Solar system
Consists of sun and eight planets
Sun is at the center of the solar
system
The third planet is earth
Earth is unique from other planets
Because life exists on earth.
Rotation
Rotation of earth is nothing
but earth spins around on its axis
Axis passes through the centre
of the earth
It’s an imaginary line
Its not real
The line of axis passes through
north pole to the south pole
The top point of the earth is
called as
north pole and the end point is
called as south pole.
What happens when
the earth rotates
When the earth rotates day and night
happens
The portion which is exposed to the sun is
called a day
The portion which away from the sunlight
is night
The rotation of the earth us continues so
the pattern of day and night continues.
Earth takes 24 hours to complete one
rotation.
Day consists of 12 hours and the night
consists of 12hours.

Possible
Preconceptions/Misconceptions:
● The earth is larger than the sun.
● The sun disappears at night.
● Day and night are caused by the sun
moving from east to west across the
sky.
● The amount of daylight increases
each day throughout the summer.
Recap of the Rotation
The earth rotates on its on axis
The axis is tilted by 231/2degrees
When the earth rotates day and night happens

New words learnt
rotation- a circular movement of an object around a center or axis
● axis- the line about which a rotating body, such as the earth,
turns
● hemisphere- half of a sphere such as the earth
● patterns- the regular and repeated way in which something
happens or is done
● constant- an event that happens all the time or very often over a
period of time
orbit- (noun) a path of an object as it circles around another object
in outer space
● solar day- one complete rotation of the earth resulting in day and
night, a period of 24 hours
● circumference- the complete distance around a circle
● counter clockwise- in the opposite direction of the movement of
the hands of a clock
Interesting facts
How much time do planets take to complete one rotation?
Mercury 58 days 16 hours
Venus 243 days 14 minutes
Earth 24 hours
Moon 27 days 8 hours
Mars 24 hours 17 mins
Jupiter 9 hours 55 minutes
Saturn 10 hours 40 minutes
Uranus 17 hours and 14 minutes
Neptune 16 hours 7 minutes
Pluto 6 days 9 hours
The rotation of the earth results in many weather patterns. The lit side of the planet warms as
the dark side cools causing movement of the atmosphere.
The circumference of the earth is over 24,000 miles (24,901) and the earth is rotating at just
over 1,000 miles per hour.
The speed of rotation at the equator is 1,037 miles per hour.
The earth spins on its axis and
also revolves on the orbit around the
sun
This movement is called revolution
Its takes 365 days and 6 hours to
complete one revolution .
The earth’s axis is not straight
and it is tilted by 23 and half degrees
The horizontal line which is passing
from the middle of the earth will
divide earth into halves and also
called hemispheres
The path of the Earth moving
around the Sun is called an orbit.
The Earth’s orbit is elliptical.
How to calculate leap year?
In the Gregorian calendar, a normal
year consists of 365 days.
The time required for the Earth to
revolve once about the Sun is actually
365.6 hours, a "leap year" of 366 days is
used once every four years.
Any year that is evenly divisible by 4 is
a leap year: for example, 1988, 1992,
and 1996 are leap years.
How much time do planets take to complete one revolution?
Planet Mean distance from the Sun in millions of kms Period of
Revolution
Mercury 57.9 88 days
Venus 108.2 224.7 days
Earth 149.6 365.2 days
Mars 227.9 687 days
Jupiter 778.3 11.86 years
Saturn 1,427 29.46 years
Uranus 2,870 84 years
Neptune 4,497 165 years
How seasons happen?
The tilt causes one part of the
earth to lean towards the sun
while other part of it is leaning
away from the sun
Means different part of the
earth receives different
amount of sunlight and heat.
Earth travels around the sun
creates a pattern through out
the year
Thus pattern happens over and
over again
At certain times of the year the
northern hemisphere is tilted towards
the sun and at times it is southern
hemisphere
The hemisphere that is exposed to
the sun experience summer and the
other hemisphere experience winter.
In between the summer and the
winter there will be spring and
autumn.
In summer season the days will be
long and in the winters the night will
be long. So this revolution causes
seasons on earth.
How the seasons happen

What happens to Earth in December
