Seated Female Figuring Holding a
Baby
Period: Cypro-Archaic II
Date: ca. 600–480 B.C.
Terra Cotta Sculpture
In the sculpture the seated female
figuring holding a baby it has actual
balance but not a very notable actual
weight. It was sculpted from terra cotta
material. Even tough in the seated
female figuring holding a baby you can
notice that the unknown artist intricate
details of her face are fading, you can
still appreciate the emotion the
unknown artist is trying to convey. The
sculpture is in good proportion from
mother to baby even tough the total size
is 18.9cm.
The Beautiful Virgin of Regensburg
in an Architectural Frame
Albrecht Altdorfer (German, (?) ca.
1480–1538 Regensburg)
Medium: Chiaroscuro woodcut,
printed from a line block and four tone
blocks; first state of three (New
Hollstein)
In the Beautiful Virgin of Regensburg
you can see the gradual shift from dark
to light or chiaroscuro. The bronze
color and blue color contrast give the
virgin dimension. The light to dark
change make this print bold and 2
dimensional. The artist limited himself
to two colors but in the contrast of light
and dark it seems like many more
colors are used. It gives mother and
baby depth and texture.
Sculpture of Virgin and Child, Notre
Dame, Paris
Auguste Mestral (French, Rans 1812–
1884 Rans)
Date: ca. 1851
Medium: Salted paper print from paper
negative
In the print of the sculpture of Virgin
and Child, Norte Dame, Paris you can
see diagonal balance of the print. In the
print you can see the contrast of light
and dark. You can say the sun is on the
left side and it’s visible light. The chaos
surrounding the Virgin and Child gives
you the impression that she is surviving
the ruins and coming into the light.
Mary and Her Mother, Long Island
Edward J. Steichen (American (born
Luxembourg), Bivange 1879–1973 West
Redding, Connecticut)
Date: 1905
Medium: Direct carbon print
In the photograph of Mary and her
Mother, you can see the chiaroscuro used.
The darkness of the background brings
forth the softness of the human face of
Mary and her mother. Here the lack of
color gives it more stark contrast and
evokes a warm maternal feeling from
mother to Mary.
Mrs. Marinus Willett and Her Son
Marinus, Jr.
John Vanderlyn (American, Kingston,
New York 1775–1852 Kingston, New
York)
Date: ca. 1802
Medium: Oil on canvas
On the canvas Mrs. Marinus Willett
and her son the artist used
hierarchical scaling to relate the
importance of the mother to son. In
the background being so dark the
subjects are so vastly lighter making
the son the focal point. The dark
value in the mother’s dress is
balanced by the son’s light garment
and balances this composition. The
protective and loving display comes
thru in this painting of mother and
child.
Mother and Child on a Bench
Pablo Picasso (Spanish, Malaga
1881–1973 Mougins, France )
Date: 1901
Medium: Pastel on paper
In the drawing of Mother and Child
on a Bench by Pablo Picasso we see
a mother’s expression is the
emphasis of the drawing. It feels
like she is overwhelmed and
isolated and her only comfort is the
baby. The use of colors in this
drawing gives you a sense of
hopefulness. The blue tones make
the women the focal point in the
drawing. Picasso’s strokes in the
drawing are precise and subtle to
give the audience a 3-dimensional
form instead of flat.
The theme of the exposition is “Mother’s Nurturing Love” and
they are thematically similar. The works of art I choose are from different
time periods, drawing, paintings, photographs, print and a sculpture.
The overwhelming theme in these art works is a mother’s infinite love for
their child. They all provoke sweet tender feelings of love and especially
as a mother. Each artist conveys their individual interpretation of love.
Everyone’s first experience of love comes from their mother.
