Chapter 5
Modeling Health Information System
Lecture 5: Objectives
After this lecture, you should be able to answer the following
questions:
•What are models and what are metamodels?
•Specify factors determining what will be included in Health
information systems model
•What are the typical types of meta models for HIS?
•What are the Steps of creating HIS Metamodels
What are models and what are
metamodels?
Modeling Health Information Systems
Models
When dealing with systems in general and with HIS in
particular, we need models of for the system.
A model simulates real world in a digital form:
 Process
 Functions
 Procedures
 Rules
Meta Modeling Health Information
Systems
A meta model can be understood as a language for
constructing models of a certain class and a guideline for
using the language.
A large number of different classes of models exists.
Each class of models is determined by a certain
metamodel

Example from databases model and
meta model

Meta-model
Meta-meta-model Relational data model:
Tables, attributes, tuples
Database schema:
Student, Course, Enrolment …
Database tables of tuples:
(andreas, muster, 07-123-123), …
Real world:
You, MMS, …
«represented-by»
«instance-of»
«instance-of»
Factors determining what will be included
in Health information systems model
 Which hospital functions are supported by a HIS?
 Which information processing tools are used?
 What information is needed, if a patient shall be
admitted to the hospital?
 What information can be provided afterwards?
 What will happen if a specific server breaks down?
 How can the quality of information processing be
judged?
Factors determining what will be included in
Health information systems model
Typical types of metamodels for HIS
Typical types of metamodels for HIS
• Organizational Metamodels, Which Are Used
To Create Models Of The Organizational
Structure Of HIS.
• Data Metamodels, Which Are Used For
Building Models Of The Structure Of Data
Processed And Stored Inside A HIS.
• Business Process Metamodels, Which Focus
On The Description Of What Is Done In
Logical Order.
Typical types of metamodels for HIS
• Functional Metamodels, Focusing On
Hospital Functions That Are Supported By
The Information System.
• Technical Metamodels, Which Are Used To
Build Models Describing The Information
Processing Tools Used.
Typical types of metamodels for HIS
• Information System Metamodels, Which
Combine Different Metamodels Into An
Integrated, Enterprise-wide View On
Information Processing In An Institution.
Modeling Health Information Systems
Steps of creating HIS Metamodels
Steps of creating HIS Metamodels
1. Define the questions or tasks to be
solved by the HIS model
2. Select an adequate metamodel
3. Gather the information needed for
modeling
4. Create the model
Steps of creating HIS Metamodels
5- Analyze and interpret the model
(answer your questions)
6- Evaluate if the right metamodel was
chosen, that is, if the model was
adequate to answer the questions. If not,
return to step 2
