Ancient Rome was a significant civilization that spanned over a millennium,
evolving from a small city-state on the Italian peninsula to a vast empire that
controlled much of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. This civilization
left a lasting impact on modern languages, government, law, architecture, and
religion.

the city of Rome. It initially functioned as a monarchy before transitioning to a
republic.

Following the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, Rome became an empire under the
first emperor, Augustus. This period saw a golden age of peace and prosperity.
