A Basic Laser Diffraction System
1. Title 9
Calculating Particle Size
o Laser Diffraction Instrument measures light
scattering (not particle size)
o To convert light scattering to Size we need to do
some modelling. The two most common models
used are:
o Fraunhofer Approximation
o Mie Theory (Recommended by ISO13320)
1. Title 10
Laser diffraction – getting the
result
o Light scattering models were developed to calculate
the scattering pattern from a known particle size
distribution.
o The Mastersizer measures a scattering distribution
and uses Mie theory to calculate Size.
o How do we use scattering theory to arrive at a size
distribution from the laser diffraction data?
o We have to back calculate using an iterative
inversion process
