Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Theory and Definitions:
Oil and gas are very important, for these sources of energy are frequently and commonly used to
provide different services. For instance, The United States of America consumes about 20% of
world’s oil and gas consumption, 68% of the hydrocarbon consumed in the United States of
America is used for transportations, and the consumption of motor gasoline each day is estimated
to be about 391 million dollars (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2020). As the
consumption of oil and gas has increased, the drilling rigs which are used to drill through the
formations in order to find hydrocarbons advancements happened simultaneously. The main
purpose of these systematic advancements is to ensure a safer and a relatively easier drilling
operation. Most of the accidents happen on the derrick floor, for example being hit by a moving
equipment, tripping, burns, eye irritations, and a blowout. Due to the probability of the occurrence
of various accidents, there is fire water system and first aid firefighting system, and the workers
are provided with PPE, personal protective equipment. Moreover, the procedures during drilling
operation should be followed carefully and accurately to prevent any misfortune.
The usage of drilling fluid is very important during drilling operation, for it has many functions.
Drilling mud aids in transporting cutting, in understanding geology of the formation by MWD,
cooling the drill bit, and in controlling the wellbore pressure (Chemwotei, 2011). However, the
drilling mud used is toxic and can lead to severe health hazards if it is not handled appropriately.
The drilling mud toxicity is shown by a study which identified the existence of 36 harmful
chemicals like chromium and formic acids (Kretzmann, 2013). These chemicals can lead to cancer
and problems in the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous system (Kretzmann, 2013). Not only
2
does these chemicals act as a potential health risk to the human being, but also if they were left
untreated, they can impact and pollute the environment (Kretzmann, 2013). One of the important
equipment which decreases the risks due to the contact of drilling fluid is called “Mud bucket”
which collects the mud which is in the drilling pipe section that is formed from three pipes. Also,
it ensures that the derrick floor is clean which decreases the chance of slippage. Also, mud in the
mud box can be reused after removing cuttings, thus decreasing the percentage of mud needed.
1.2 Objective: Mud bucket is used to accumulate the mud in the drilling pipes where it ensures the
safety of the workers and the environments, decreases the cost of the mud, and is primary
contributor to the solid system.

Chapter 2: Equipment Used
Figure 2.1: Mud bucket (Ray Oil Tool, 2020)
▪ Mud bucket: The main purpose is the retention of the mud during tripping out which is in
section which consists of three pipes. Mud bucket aids in the prevention of the spillage of
the mud on the derrick floor which can lead to accidents like slipping of the crew members.
Also, it benefits in enhancing the efficiency of the drilling operation because it is an easy,
low maintenance operation which makes tripping out easier and faster. For instance,
automated mud bucket gets locked between the drilling string automatically, so the number
of pinch points decrease. Furthermore, mud bucket has a lot of beneficial characteristics
such that it does not need a lot of space (Schlumberger, 2020). Additionally, there are
different types of mud buckets where some are characterized by their lighter weight and
other by the easiness of changing the seal which should be wrapped around the drill pipe
(Keystone Energy Tools, 2020). Companies choose the appropriate mud bucket depending
on the requirements of the drilling operations.

▪ Draw-work: The draw-work system has improved significantly where its control system
is automated, consists of different types of brakes like regenerative and dynamic
(MHWirth, 2015). Also, the draw-work has new improvements such that the equipment
vibrates less, integrated auto driller, safer, and different options for the driver which are
AC and DC (MHWirth, 2015).
▪ Dolly: hoists of the drill string which consists of three pipes vertically either up or down
▪ Elevator: a ring which can hold the weight of drilling string in order to stop its swinging
during drilling operations and when not needed it can unlock pipe (Schlumberger, 2020).
Also, it allows the hoisting of the drilling.
▪ Slip: grasping the three vertical pipes in order to allow various drilling operations
▪ Drill pipe: It is a hollow pipe with a specified a drift, range of the acceptable internal
diameter, length, and a specific grade. Drill pipe must sustain toxic chemicals like 𝐻2𝑆 and
intense torque and stress. Moreover, the error related to deviation of the pipe, axial force,
and the temperature of the fluid should not exceed 0.05 (Donskoy, 2010). Also, 5 ton is the
maximum mass of the pipe (Donskoy, 2010).
▪ Iron rough neck: An important machine that reduced the risk of accidents during tripping
operations. Its main function is makeup, and break out operations. Also, it has a very
modern clamping system which consists of a gripper, guide, ruler which aids in the
distribution of the load equally (MHWirth, 2015).

Chapter 3: Procedures
▪ Press driller mode button (Left screen)
▪ DW ON and confirm (Left screen)
▪ DW park off and confirm (Left screen) to be able to move the dolly
▪ Extend the dolly using the left joint stick
▪ Automatically, the elevator closes around the pipe
▪ Double click on the right joint stick to open the slips partially
▪ Hoist up using the right joint stick backward in order to open the slips completely
▪ Hoist up three pipes by the right joint stick
▪ Double click on the right joint stick to close the slips partially
▪ Hoist down by moving the right joint stick upward to close the slips completely
▪ Press on assistance mode (Left screen)
▪ Follow the auto-sequence until it asks for iron roughneck breakout
▪ Click on IR Auto, IR ON, and IR WC (Right screen)
▪ Extent the right joint stick forward to move the iron roughneck
▪ Press IR B/O auto (Right screen)
▪ Also, on the right screen press MB, mud bucket, and MB WC
▪ Continue the auto-sequence where the dolly will lift the pipe a little bit to remove any mud
stuck in the pipe and wait for a specific duration
▪ MP park OFF, to retract the mud bucket to its initial place
▪ Retract the iron roughneck by using the right joint stick backward
▪ Continue the auto-sequence

Chapter 4: Conclusion
Technological advancements seek to make the drilling process and the various operations
related to it easier, faster, and most importantly safer. Ensuring the safety of the employees on
the drilling rig increases the productivity and decreases the chance of any failure. A good
management system and awareness of the potential errors which might occur is the key to
control the occurrence of unwanted, fatal accidents (Ford, 2012). Furthermore, mud bucket is
one of the equipment which ensures the safety of workers by decreasing their contact with the
toxic, complex drilling fluid. Also, this significant equipment permits a smooth tripping out
operation.
