Chapter 4Using Instructional Software and Multimedia for Content-Area Learning
Computer-based and computer assisted instruction applications make the computer directly responsible for instruction. Technology controls the information students see and the interactions they have with this information while engaging students in the specific activities to aid in learning.
Instruction in technology follows the general instruction process: 1) Exposure to information or learning experiences. 2) Initial guidance as the student struggles to understand the information or execute the skill to be learned. 3) Extended practice to provide fluency or to ensure retention. 4) Assessment of student learning. Instructional software: tutorials, simulations, drill-and-practice applications, educational games, and exploratory environments can aid teachers in completing this process.
Multimedia can encourage students to think about complex issues. Using video and anchoring tasks in realistic settings make assignments meaningful to students.
Multimedia and hypermedia offer an alternative to learning from traditional sources but also require the development of new skills. Graphics, videos, and other forms of multimedia can be distracting and it is as important for students to know how to interpret this information in the medium presented as it is for teachers to understand how to use multimedia effectively.
There are three types of approaches learners take while exploring multimedia: Knowledge seekers, feature explorers, and apathetic users. This information is helpful for teachers to understand when they assign tech work or go to the computer lab as it will help them identify students and help them succeed.
