This document summarizes the results of a European multi-criteria evaluation that compared various insulation materials used in buildings. The key conclusions are: 1) All insulation materials provide overall sustainability benefits over a building's lifetime; 2) No single material is best for all applications - results depend on the application and construction; 3) Natural materials are not necessarily more sustainable than plastics or minerals. The study evaluated over 300 insulation products across various applications in Germany and Italy. Plastic foams generally performed best for flat roofs, pitched roofs, and external wall insulation, while mineral fibers and natural fibers showed advantages in other applications.
