MULTIMODAL PROJECT 2
2021
ENC1143, or Writing with Evidence and Style, is a class offered to all students at the
University of North Florida. It allows students the opportunity to learn all about
proper writing in different forms, with the use of evidence when necessary. The four
main topics you will learn and master are basic concepts of academic discourse,
evidence-based writing, synthesis writing, and writing about change.
2021 MULTIMODAL PROJECT 3
Introduction
Academic Discourse
Academic discourse focuses on the writing and communication we use when we take part
in academic discussion and learning. It allows us to communicate our thoughts and
opinions in the way we view the world as individuals. Examples of academic discourse
include presentations, lectures, textbooks, journals, articles, essays, etc.

Evidence-Based Writing
In evidence-based writing, one must use other sources as support for your ideas and claims. These
sources, such as facts from journals and academic articles, that are part of the research must be
credible themselves in order to help make your arguments credible as well, so that your claims are
supported by valid statements. As a result, your audience is more likely to be persuaded by your
statements and evidence. To be more specific, this evidence is presented as in-text citations within
your writing, as well as a list of bibliographies in APA or MLA, depending on the circumstance.

Synthesis Writing
The word “synthesis” means “combing”. In synthesis writing, you are putting together different
ideas and connections into one to create one solid argument. In order to keep your thoughts
together and organized, you should sort through your sources and examples, design and outline
your format, use paragraph structure with topic sentences in each, and go back through the whole
thing a couple times to proofread. That way your arguments and claims will be clear and easy to
read.

Writing About Change
When you write about change, you can choose a topic that you are very interested in that
you feel requires a change in present time. It can be about almost anything, as long as you
can find valid and credible sources that support your claims. For example, a topic I wrote
about in this class was how art therapy should be valid form of rehabilitating people with
Parkinson’s Disease.
