The exact cause is unknown but may involve viruses. It most commonly affects women between the ages of 20 and 40 and has a genetic component. Symptoms vary but can include problems with muscle control and coordination, vision, sensation, and cognitive abilities. Diagnosis involves spinal taps and MRI scans. While currently incurable, treatments include medications and therapies to manage symptoms.
