Multiplying Decimals 10/19/09
How It Works Multiplying decimals is exactly the same as multiplying whole numbers. You just have to put the decimal in the right place. For example: 3.4 x 4.2 Simply multiply the numbers the same way you would if they were 34 and 42. Then…..
Count how many numbers TOTAL are behind the decimal in the problem. In this case, there are 2. So in your product, count 2 numbers from the right and put your decimal there. 3.4 x 4.2 = 14.28  two numbers behind the decimal!
Examples 4.5 x 0.5 Step 1: Multiply the top number by 5. Step 2: Insert the place holder in the ones place for your next product. Multiply the top number by 0. Step 3: Add. Step 4: Count the total amount of numbers behind the decimal in the problem (it’s 2). Step 5: Insert your decimal where it’s needed. Answer = 2.25
Examples 7 x 3.72 Step 1: Multiply 7 by 2. Step 2: Insert place holder in the ones place for the next product. Step 3: Multiply 7 by 7. Step 4: Insert place holder in the ones and tens place for the next product. Step 5: Multiply 7 by 3. Step 6: Add. Step 7: Count the total amount of numbers behind the decimal in the problem. Step 8: Insert the decimal where needed.
