*
*Rare birds are those treasured species that are close to
extinction, having only a few remaining members. They
are found on various continents and often are hardly
ever seen.
*
The black swan is a large water
bird
It breeds mainly in the south east
and south west regions of Australia.
These are large birds with mostly
black plumage and red bills.
They are monogamous breeders
that share incubation duties and
cygnet rearing between the sexes.
Black swans can be found singly or
in loose companies numbering in to
the hundreds or even thousands.
*
Pelicans are a genus of large water
birds comprising the family
pelecanidae.
They are characterized by long beak
and large throat pouch used for
catching prey and draining water from
the scooped up contents before
swallowing
They have predominantly pale
plumage, the exceptions being the
brown and peruvian pelicans.
The bills, pouches and bare facial
skin of all species become brightly
coloured before the breeding season.
They also have a long history of
cultural significance in mythology and
in Christian and heraldic iconography.
*
The loons or divers are a group
of aquatic birds found in many
parts of America
The loon, the size of large
duck or small goose, resembles
these birds is shape when
swimming
The bird holds its head
pointing slightly up wards during
swimming.
 In flight the head droops more
than in similar aquatic birds.
*
The frogmouths are a group of
nocturnal birds related to the nightjars.
They are named for their large
flattened hooked bills and huge frog-like
gape, which they use to capture
insects.
Their flight is weak
They rest horizontally on branches
during the day, camouflaged by their
cryptic plumage.
Up to three white eggs are laid in the
fork of a branch, and are incubated by
the female at night and the male in the
day.
*
Grouse are heavily built like
other galliformes such as
chickens.
Males are bigger than females
Grouse have feathered nostrils.
Their legs are feathered to the
toes, small scales on the sides,
an adaptation for walking on
snow and burrowing in to it for
shelters.
