MUSIC VIDEO
ASSIGNMENT 2
James Alvarez
TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Rone – Parade
•Animation
With animation you are not limited with what you want to happen, see or create
•Stop motion
In the music video they used stop motion in order to create a partial effect allowing her
to appear floating. From this many interesting effect could be created through this
method.
•DSLR camera film
• Filming normally with more frames also gives the video a completely different
effect being significantly smoother. Shooting with higher FPS also allows for
options with slow motion
https://youtu.be/GW7iHpkUGLU
Rone
It clear that the music is significantly enhanced by the animated visuals
which are intern synced to the beat. Also the visuals alone are very well
done as they are done in a way to create illusions in an artistic way. I
believe Rone has done this to express not a story but there imagination.
I believe this is a niche area of music video and appeal not to a specific age
group but to more creative people who are interested artistic productions.
Also due to the ‘trippy’ nature of the video a lot of hippies find this
interesting as it can “give the brain something creative to imagine and
explore” - Rone

M
TASK 3 – CASE STUDY
Lorn
Tends to focus on black and white for a monochromatic effect however the
music videos are significantly different however most of them have a
similar ominous effect or an uncertainty about them I believe he uses that
to intrigue the viewers. In these wide range of music videos that he
produces many different techniques are used such as complex animation
along with DLSR camera work. He always seams to make the video match
with the music hinting outlines of a story but never making it too clear
leaving the viewer to put the pieces of the story together.
This is also a very niche music video which focuses on a more artistic
approach creating something unique rather than just focusing on
mainstream pop culture music videos. I believe that it works so well
because neither the music and the videos is what I would call mainstream
and the way he creates synergy between them due to the story and the
atmospheric environment allows the viewer to be immersed into the video
and music.

Kid Francescoli (Moon)
A very clever idea of stop motion used this intern gives the music video a
special uniqueness to it as is extremely niche for music video. In the video
he plays around shooting different clips at different fps in order to give
some of the clips a rough look and detail to them. However in these scenes
he keeps them slow in order to match the music.
A due to the title of the song called moon the stop motion animation is
based around times of the day focusing on scenes or views of environments
with the moon in it. For example a city or a train with the moon and stars
going past symbolizes the everyday life gong past in seconds.
I believe that this is not targeted at a certain age range and is considered
artistic due to its unique animation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdixQDPA2h0
Logic
The editing is very fast pased with lots of short clips and many interesting
effects and transitions. I believe that this music video is targeted at the
masses as it uses a very similar formula to the majority of modern day
music videos. There are also many close up shots or shots that change
rapidly from far out to profile shots.
In this video there is no storyline other than “logic simply telling his story”
.this intern means there has to significantly more or fast pased post-
processing or editing in order to make the video entertaining.

POTENTIAL SONGS
•Lorn - Anvil
•Rone – Parade
•Rone – Bye Bye Macadam
•Rone – Origami
•River Rocket (feat. Paul Dano)
•Montage (feat. Paul Dano)
POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
Animation
A key technique used by the majority or artists I have
have looked at as it doesn’t limit creativity.
Close Camera work
From looking at artists such as logic he uses a lot a close
up shots in order to center the focus on him.
Monochrome
Use monochromatic effect keeping the colours black and
white providing the scenes with increased contrast and
distinction
CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
•Use of animation
•Not specifically to focus on creating a story but rather a
video that complements the audio.
•Camera shots
•Use aftereffects for animation then premiere for editing
the camera work in the the animated work
SUMMARY
•By using both animation and camera work my creativity
is not limited with what I can do.
•With the use of animation I can create many different
visually interesting effects
•Also with animation I can sync the visuals directly to the
audio
•The camera work provides the real world effect
•With close up shots I can direct the focus on specific
areas to the scene
SUMMARY
•The animation means the it will take longer to produce.
•The transition between camera work and animation may
not work.
•Animation and camera work is limited by my ability.
•Camera work is also limited by skill but also the quality
of the camera.
•I'm relying on my sister to be free so I can use her as the
actor.
FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFOBye Bye Macadam/ Rone
39 years old Rone (Erwan Castex) is a French music
producer and artist.

Genre info
Alternative, electronic, artistic and trippy
FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
•Steady peace
•Music video up to 4.02 minutes (maximum)
•The song its self isn't that amazing. Its all about
matching the visuals to the audio in order to enhance the
media
•Animation for majority
•Camera work at the start and ending
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
•Girl walks up to watch TV.
•Close up shot (camera) Girl in a dark environment with
an old tv turns on the tv to be watching the animated
video
•Animation centered around the beat while being a fluid
animation constantly changing symbolising that she is
dreaming
•Sticking to monochrome colour scheme
•Transitions to her watching the animation in different
locations further symbolising that she is dreaming.
•Ends with her the viewer seeing she is asleep
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
LOCATIONS
Grandparents attic
• Weather will not effect this footage as its inside
• I live in the same village so I can walk there to get footage
Grandparents garden
• Weather may effect issues such as lighting quality or if it is raining it may prevent
me from filming.
• Very close to where I live so no driving needed so the cost will be nothing.
Home garden
• As I will be outside the weather may also similarly effect the footage however I
believe it will look good contrasting inside footage with outside footage.
• It is also very easy to film there as I live there.
EQUIPMENT
I already have a camera that I can use at home so I do not need
any equipment from college.
I also have a pc with after effects and premiere so editing this
will not be an issue.
I also have lights at home that can help with different scenes
for inside
•Camera stabiliser
•Camera
•Camera tripod
things such as the camera stabiliser can help me smooth the
footage out when filming inside and out.
FACILITIES
•Computers at home and computers
at school that I can use for editing
•Grandparents house along with my
house will be used to film
•Maybe outside facilities as my
grandparents house
PERSONNEL
Actor in the music video – my sister
Editing, filming and directing - me
By doing this it gives me more responsibility however it
also gives me more control. Also my case studies (music
videos) often use animation or use only one person so
this is another factor in me only choosing one actor.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
For props I have decided to use a TV however a dated TV. Ideally an
analog TV which you can see the static black and white dots.
For clothes she can wear anything which is not too eye grabbing so no
brightly coloured clothes. So the viewer is not drawn to the clothes
derestricting the viewer from the main focus of the scenes.
In some of my scenes I will also need a TV remote to use as a prop.
I will also need an old stool to prop the TV on
I will not need many props as the majority of the music video consists
of animation
throughout all clips I plan to keep 3 things the same:
Her clothes
TV
Old stool
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
INSPIRATION
Entangled by Lorn is very interesting as it creates a dark
mysterious effect through the use of the camera filter
along with specific angled shots. Also as there is only
one actor it allows the viewer to focus and follow this
specific character. I also took inspiration from this music
video also due to the visual transitions between different
camera shots such as the transition between camera and
how it directs the viewers focus very easily. Also the luts
which has been applied give the video a dull blue tint
creating an interesting effect.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6ZNGddbzzw
LIGHTING
3 Point Lighting
 Key Light
 Light with the highest brightness
 Setup at 45° in front of your actor/model
 Fill Light
 Lower brightness than Key Light
 Setup at 45° in front of your actor/model mirroring Key Light
 Back Light
 Similar brightness to Fill Light
 Setup at 45° behind your actor/model mirroring Key Light
When filming inside I will adjust the
lighting to my liking however will need
to see how it looks in real time
COLOUR AND LIGHTING
In the shots linking to my case studies I’m planning to
use subtle colours (nothing which stands out) while in the
post processing using a luts colour pack in adobe
premiere in order to give the footage a cinematic effect
similar to that in Entangled - Lorn
For lighting I plan to have a couple lamps set up with
lamp cover distillers while allowing natural light from out
side in order to create a gloomy or dull effect similar to
that in Entangles – Lorn
The the lighting I will also edit the lux settings in adobe
premiere to suit the type of shot changing the original
footage
INTRO
•Visual animation
significantly faster
•Significantly more
complex
•Monochrome
•Liquid effect
•In keeping with the
beat (visual matching
the audio)
•Visual pulses
matching multiple
specific elements of
the audio.
FINALE
•Visual animation slow
•Basic
•Monochrome
•Liquid effect
•In keeping with the
beat (visual matching
the audio)
•Visual pulses
matching specific
elements of the
audio like the main
single beat of the
Animation
• Introducing the character
• Front and back angle shots
creating dynamics focusing
mainly on profile shots rather
than the front facing face shots.
• Character switches on an
analog TV.
• Displays static
• The scene which transitions
from camera work to
animation
• The animation must have a
vintage effect similar to the old
drawing animation effects from
videos such as Mickey Mouse
(1920s). I will do this using a luts
pack or change colour gradient
with a tint.
• The animation which hooks the
girl into the screen through the
trippy visuals.
The animation stops transitioning
to her sleeping.

I also have lights at home that can help with different scenes for inside •Camera stabiliser •Camera •Camera tripod things such as the camera stabiliser can help me smooth the footage out when filming inside and out.
  • 19. FACILITIES •Computers at home and computers at school that I can use for editing •Grandparents house along with my house will be used to film •Maybe outside facilities as my grandparents house
  • 20. PERSONNEL Actor in the music video – my sister Editing, filming and directing - me By doing this it gives me more responsibility however it also gives me more control. Also my case studies (music videos) often use animation or use only one person so this is another factor in me only choosing one actor.
  • 21. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC For props I have decided to use a TV however a dated TV. Ideally an analog TV which you can see the static black and white dots. For clothes she can wear anything which is not too eye grabbing so no brightly coloured clothes. So the viewer is not drawn to the clothes derestricting the viewer from the main focus of the scenes. In some of my scenes I will also need a TV remote to use as a prop. I will also need an old stool to prop the TV on I will not need many props as the majority of the music video consists of animation throughout all clips I plan to keep 3 things the same: Her clothes TV Old stool

  • 23. INSPIRATION Entangled by Lorn is very interesting as it creates a dark mysterious effect through the use of the camera filter along with specific angled shots. Also as there is only one actor it allows the viewer to focus and follow this specific character. I also took inspiration from this music video also due to the visual transitions between different camera shots such as the transition between camera and how it directs the viewers focus very easily. Also the luts which has been applied give the video a dull blue tint creating an interesting effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6ZNGddbzzw
  • 24. LIGHTING 3 Point Lighting  Key Light  Light with the highest brightness  Setup at 45° in front of your actor/model  Fill Light  Lower brightness than Key Light  Setup at 45° in front of your actor/model mirroring Key Light  Back Light  Similar brightness to Fill Light  Setup at 45° behind your actor/model mirroring Key Light When filming inside I will adjust the lighting to my liking however will need to see how it looks in real time
  • 25. COLOUR AND LIGHTING In the shots linking to my case studies I’m planning to use subtle colours (nothing which stands out) while in the post processing using a luts colour pack in adobe premiere in order to give the footage a cinematic effect similar to that in Entangled - Lorn For lighting I plan to have a couple lamps set up with lamp cover distillers while allowing natural light from out side in order to create a gloomy or dull effect similar to that in Entangles – Lorn The the lighting I will also edit the lux settings in adobe premiere to suit the type of shot changing the original footage
  • 26. INTRO •Visual animation significantly faster •Significantly more complex •Monochrome •Liquid effect •In keeping with the beat (visual matching the audio) •Visual pulses matching multiple specific elements of the audio. FINALE •Visual animation slow •Basic •Monochrome •Liquid effect •In keeping with the beat (visual matching the audio) •Visual pulses matching specific elements of the audio like the main single beat of the Animation
  • 27. • Introducing the character • Front and back angle shots creating dynamics focusing mainly on profile shots rather than the front facing face shots. • Character switches on an analog TV. • Displays static • The scene which transitions from camera work to animation • The animation must have a vintage effect similar to the old drawing animation effects from videos such as Mickey Mouse (1920s). I will do this using a luts pack or change colour gradient with a tint. • The animation which hooks the girl into the screen through the trippy visuals. The animation stops transitioning to her sleeping.
