1. Access Manager 2 – a freeware program that maintains a file of usernames and
passwords.
2. Actual Doc Standard – a freeware program. Windows' Recent Documents menu is a
great idea, badly executed. Microsoft still hasn't figured out that this list should be
filtered by file type, or that you might appreciate some privacy. Luckily,
Flexigensoft figured it out and offers a better Recent Documents called ActualDoc. The
free program offers two ways to find a recently-used file. You can right-click the systray
icon for lists by category--Documents, Internet Documents, Drawings and Images, and so
on. Or you can double-click that icon for the full-fledged program, where you can narrow
the selection still further by date and file type

13. AppSnap – a free tool that shows which of the freeware tools on the PC need updating.
AppSnap scans the system and lists the apps, the version is on the PC, as well as the
program's current version number. You choose the programs needing upgrading (or new
programs you want to install) and click Upgrade. AppSnap silently installs each app so
you don't have to deal with separate application installation routines. You can scan for
applications in various categories, such as Installed, Not Installed, Upgradable, or, if you
want to remove programs, Removable. The big surprise was how many popular tools--
and most of your favorites--AppSnap had in its database: CCleaner, Firefox, Google

Desktop, Google Earth, iTunes, Opera, PDF Creator, Winamp, and Thunderbird, to name

21. CamStudio – a freeware program records activity from your screen and audio from a
microphone into AVI video files and can also convert the AVIs into Streaming Flash

22. CCleaner – CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization and
privacy tool. It removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing
Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best

average browsing activities without complicating the tasks, but at the same time powerful

27. Clickster – a freeware program is the essential application for every lover of music.
Clickster enables you to easily search for and download mp3 files from the Internet in a
totally legal and safe environment. This free program searches the Web for free MP3
music files from your favorite artists, and delivers them to your desktop. Clickster's
developer, Robert Palmer, insists that there's no copyright issues to worry about, since the
MP3s that Clickster accesses are free files stored on Web sites. As long as you don't share

37. DVD Flick – a freeware program You probably have lots of different videos and films
on your computer you would like to play on your home DVD player. Unfortunately,
many DVD players can only read the standard DVD format and it's therefore a waste of
resources to burn DVDs with avi, mpeg or wmv files. DVD Flick comes in handy
because it converts PC video files to a proper DVD format, readable by all standard

to help manage Windows Vista's built-in firewall. Microsoft has been touting the new
Windows Firewall in Windows Vista, which it says for the first time includes an
outbound filter as well as an inbound filter. Outbound filters are important, because if
you've been infected with a Trojan or similar software, it makes an outbound connection
without your knowledge, letting someone else take control of your PC. Some malware
can also turn your PC into a spam-spewing robot, sending out email without your
knowledge. Unfortunately, the outbound filter in Windows Vista is, in essence, turned off
by default. And as a practical matter, it's impossible to manually configure it to block
malware making outbound connections. That's where the free VistaFirewallControl
comes in. Install it, and whenever an application tries to access the Internet, a screen pops

Here are four useful programs that will run on any storage device, even your MP3 player:
A free office suite. Imagine showing up to give a PowerPoint presentation, but the computer you
are given doesn't have PowerPoint installed. You can download a free viewer from Microsoft,
but forget about last second changes in sale figures.
That's where Portable OpenOffice comes in. It's a free suite of programs. Included are a word
processor, a spreadsheet, multimedia presentation program, drawing program and a database
management program. All of the programs are compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Visio and Access. They are also compatible with other programs like Word Perfect
and Lotus. Even though it's a portable version of OpenOffice.org, it still requires a lot of space -
167 MB.
2) A Web browser. Surfing the Net on a public computer is, well, public. Purchasing something
online and failing to sign out could be dangerous. Clearing the browsing history, and dumping
the cookies and cache should erase your tracks. But what if you forget?
Portable Firefox allows you to surf the Net without leaving tracks. Extensions used on your
home computer can be carried over as well. Ditto for your bookmarks (a listing of favorite sites)
and passwords. Portable Firefox takes up 16.9 MB on a thumb drive.
3) All-in-one Instant Messaging program. Imagine talking simultaneously on Yahoo!
Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger. And using only one program.
Well, you can do it with Portable GAIM and Portable Miranda. Portable GAIM is best suited for
users who want to avoid settings. Miranda, although more complex, gives greater customization.
Portable GAIM requires 8.9MB of free space, and Portable Miranda, 1.2MB.
4) Password security. There's a user name and password for everything. Strong passwords
require a combination of letters, symbols and numbers. Those passwords are difficult to
remember. And each account should have a different password. That's a lot of information to
keep in your head!
The free KeePass stores passwords in an encrypted database. It will import your list of passwords
from various file formats, such as CSV. Or, you can enter each user name and password
manually. KeePass requires less than 1MB of space.
