What advice would you give to young lighting
designers? What should they pay attention to, and what
might be less important?
The key to a great piece of lighting design is not HOW one
goes about designing it or WHAT one designs with. It is the
‘WHY’ behind a lighting concept and design thinking.
You believe in Total Architecture solutions, what is
the biggest difference to the traditional lighting design
approach?
Total Architecture is the overall philosophy of Arup. This
holistic approach lies at the heart of what Arup does and
encompasses the concept, great things can result when “all
relevant design decisions have been considered together
and have been integrated into a whole by a well organised
team”. For the lighting practice, this means combining
lighting creativity with the highly-skilled expertise of
Arup’s engineers and environmental specialists.
You have worked on a lot of remarkable projects, where
daylight played a key role. How do you combine natural
and artificial light?
It is our responsibility to deliver a lighting design that helps
our client to create sustainable buildings, in harmony with
aesthetics and vision. We strive to continually offer fresh
insight as to how occupied spaces can become more alive
and in-touch with the natural environment. Daylight plays
a special role in our work. It can enhance architecture,
improve the way people feel and reduce our reliance on
electricity. Striking a balance between daylight and electric
light requires creative as well as scientific thinking. The
quintessence of this is to control the daylight, tame it
where needed, without sacrificing the narration of it, or its
meaning.
Buildings are complex structures. How do you make
sure not to lose control considering the different
technical requirements and users’ wishes?
I would advocate being inquisitive and collaborative yet
staying focused on doing great work and an underlying
conviction that good design can make a positive impact in
the world and help shape a sustainable future.
After many years of working in the industry you are
now heading the lighting design department at Arup.
Did you always want to be a lighting designer?
I wanted to work with light ever since discovering this
metaphorical medium after helping out with a student
production at university. However, I never thought of being
a ‘lighting designer’ as such. I simply was not aware of the
existence of such a profession until after my postgraduate
study at the Bartlett School of Architecture.
Have you ever regretted your decision?
Yes, a low point happened but it was also a turning point
when I discovered the true nature of my passion for light.
In the early days of my career, I held the misconception that
design equates only to being artistic; that engineers could
not design with big ‘D’-thinking, I later came to realise that
the two are not mutually exclusive.
I have learnt that the ability to have a vision is really what
matters. Lighting adds value not just to enable visual
functions but to create impact through both perception
and the psychological experience. Thinking creatively is
essential and involves imagination, intuition and deliberate
choice: not just being artistic.
Do you remember the first project you did the lighting
design for and if so what was it?
My first project as a pure lighting designer was The
London Millennium Bridge.
What do you consider to be the biggest changes in
lighting design over the years?
Embracing daylight and telematics as part of lighting
experience design in this ecological and digital age.
You won the Lighting Designer of the Year award in
2013, what does this award mean to you? Where do you
keep it?
Being the first woman to win the coveted Lighting Designer
of the Year Award means a lot to me. It is an important
milestone on my career journey and it has given me a
memorable moment to celebrate with my team. I keep the
trophy next to me in my office. Whilst it is a great honour
to have been given this award, it represents a stepping
stone, albeit a significant one, showing me how far I have
come but also reminding me how much further I want to go.
Your website says that Arup shapes a better world.
How do you put this mission of your company into
practice in lighting?
Shaping a sustainable future - particularly through the
urban environment - will be one of the greatest challenges
in the 21st century. The life of our cities after dark is only
one element of this challenge, but one that needs to be
addressed in a wider social, economic, and environmental
context. To shape a better world is not just about energy
efficiency but also human efficiency. Strategic lighting
design can have an impact on the ‘Total Architecture’
of the city, both today and in years to come.
In addition at Arup: art, design and technology are
combined. What is your approach to that in your
daily work?
Design thinking starts with creating authentic conceptual
designs and ends with applying technical knowledge.
Adopting state of the art technology to ensure concepts
become viable solutions that are as positive for people as
they are sustainable for the environment and for businesses
is also a central to delivering a seamless combination of
these factors.
A bit outside the box; what is your favourite piece of
art?
I like art that serves a purpose, a piece of design. At this
moment in time, my favourite is the ‘Sky Reflector-Net’
in the Fulton Center Oculus in New York.
What inspires you?
Nature - it is endlessly inspiring, intriguing and envolving.
What current developments in lighting design are
especially exciting and forward-looking in your opinion?
I‘m interested in the concept of making lighting part of
a wider distributed intelligence - an ‘internet of light’
ecosystem - which could potentially help unlock rich and
new data from lighting networks.
And what are the drivers for these developments?
The rapid advancements of the technology drive innovation,
the nature of infrastructure and lifestyle changes. >

After graduating in Engineering at the University of Cambridge in 1989,
Florence took a postgraduate course on ‘Light and Lighting’ at the Bartlett
School of Architecture.
Since then she has worked for Arup, an international design engineering
and business consulting firm, where she is now a Director. Establishing
Arup’s lighting design practice in 2001, Florence now leads a global team
of 70+ staff worldwide, representing a diverse national backgrounds,
education and experience; from engineering to architecture, physics to
fine art.
Her particular interests in visual perception and daylight have played key
roles in many of her creative and innovative design solution on award
winning projects, from museums to sport venues and transport buildings
to bridges all over the world.
As a manufacturer we are focusing on modular product
concepts, which enable us to respond to highly
personalised project requirements with cost effective
solutions. How important are custom lighting solutions
for your work and how many of your customers are
prepared to invest in them?
To maximise the full potential of LEDs, I believe that
modular kit-of-part concepts, like LEGOs, will enable our
end user clients to consider investment for varying levels
of capital expenditure vs. reduced operational expenditure
over life.
To conclude, which city would you recommend to visit in
2014 because of great architecture and lighting design?
Every city has its uniqueness and light has the capacity to
transform urban spaces and skylines all over the world.
To me, the best time and place to appreciate both has to
be by the bankside or at a harbour after dark. Hong Kong
has my vote anytime. The city may not have the best
architecture or the greatest lighting design but its sum of
parts through ‘Symphony of Light’ is magical. <<
Your office also provides sustainability consulting
services. Is lighting-based design, which provides more
than just the necessary general illumination, not a
contradiction when focusing on sustainability?
Not at all, sustainability can take many forms and it is
always important to strike a delicate balance between
social, economic and environmental considerations.
Sustainability and energy savings are important themes
for us as lighting designers. Our approach to lighting
design is a lot wider and more holistic than focussing on
just the necessary general illumination. At Arup Lighting,
we work closely with Arup’s building services engineers
and environmental specialists, which gives us tremendous
advantages over the traditional approach to lighting design.
In harmony with aesthetics and vision, I believe it is our
responsibility to deliver lighting designs for indoor and
outdoor spaces that have a positive impact on people as
well as being sustainable to the business and environment.
Key to this is to truly embrace daylight in lighting design.
We all need daylight for our health and wellbeing.
What’s more, making more use of daylight in place of
artificial lighting can help us reduce our energy
consumption. That’s why prioritising daylight in cities is
an issue that clients, architects, politicians and society as
a whole needs to engage with. As professional lighting
designers, we need to engage at a strategic level that can
influence urban planning beyond individual buildings
or spaces. And if buildings were to make widespread
use of bioreactive facades or photo-voltaic panels to
generate energy, daylight would become an even more
valuable commodity. If such methods were to be adopted,
the availability of daylight in our cities would acquire a
completely new significance.

for Clinical Research combines aesthetics with high performance

Laboratories and clinical institutes can be difficult
environments where lighting is regarded. The lighting has
to be unobtrusive so as not to divert attention and disturb
concentration but at the same time allow the right amount
of light on the task area with minimal glare. Often the
ceiling height is low and medical and research equipment
has to be taken into account when designing the lighting
scheme. In addition an enclosed fitting should be used in
order to reduce maintenance and to protect the light source
from dust.
All of the above factors apply to the Robert Aitken Institute
for Clinical Research at the University of Birmingham.
When plans were made to refurbish a complete floor plate,
a lighting solution was required that fulfilled the
characteristics of a clinical environment whilst at the same
time providing excellent performance. The lighting
consultant Couch Perry & Wilkes chose the LINIC LED
linear luminaire from WILA against two other manufacturers
mainly due to the high performance as well as the style
of the product. The LINIC LED can be recessed, surface
mounted or pendant, supplied with either an opal or
micro-prismatic diffuser and can be manufactured as
a continuous profile to meet specific lengths.
For this particular project the profile size of the luminaire
is ideal, the slim design and ‘clean lines’ integrate perfectly
with the style and the design of the building. Within the >

laboratory areas the surface mounted version is utilised,
continuous lines of LINIC LED with lengths of up to 9.5 m
are installed. The continuous installation allows for through
wiring preventing any exposed cabling and keeps the
ceiling appearance clean and uncluttered. In the circulation
areas due to the 2.3 m low ceiling height, the recessed
version is used with lengths ranging from around 0.6 m to
4 m. A uniform illumination was achieved throughout with
minimal scalloping on the corridor walls.
The DALI lighting control system ensures a maintained
level of 500 lux achieved throughout, with up to 750+ lux
achievable if necessary. The colour temperature of the
LED’s is 4000K and all LINIC profiles were supplied with
an opal diffuser. Initially the scheme was designed around
T5, however based on the cost uplift coupled with the
energy consumption benefits for the building the switch
to LED was then preferred by the client. The solution not
only works towards the sustainability of the building, but
also achieves lower embedded carbon, thus reducing the
University’s overall carbon footprint. <<

Precise Lighting Technology with
High Visual Comfort
The powerful light emitted by the two lateral LED modules either 3000K or 4000K is directed into the transparent panel with minimal losses. The built-in
Light Control Structure (LCS) refracts the light at precisely precalculated points directing it into the room with no glare. This permits any arrangement
of the luminaire, regardless of the orientation, while still complying with glare-limitation standards < 3000 cd/m2
. A luminaire that truly allows for flexible
lighting design. An absolutely homogeneous illumination of the luminaire without any undesirable bright or dark zones results in a perfect appearance in use.

Pure Architecture
The transparent nature of the material enables to create an architecture of light and transparency.
Since the luminaire does not superimpose the language of architecture, interiors retain their originally
planned autonomy. When switched on, these luminaires allow rooms to be deliberately re-interpreted.

Luminaire luminous flux Llm
The luminaire luminous flux (Llm) defines the usable light of the luminaire
and is the decisive value in lighting design. As opposed to the lamp
luminous flux (lm), the luminaire luminous flux (Llm) accounts for losses
due to the design of the luminaire. WILA defines only the Llm value for
all LED lamps. This value can be found both in data sheets and in the
relevant EULUMDAT file.
System efficiency Llm/W
System efficiency defines the ratio of luminaire luminous flux (Llm) to
power input (W). Efficiency losses due to gear boxes have already been
taken into account by WILA in the Llm/W value.
System photometric data
For a qualified comparison between LED luminaires and luminaires
with compact fluorescent lamps, it is important to ensure first that the
products to be compared share approximately the same photometric
data. Sample calculation:
LED luminous flux 2000 lm (100%) - system losses (light output ratio) =
luminaire luminous flux 1720 Llm
LED efficiency 2000 lm : 29 W = 69 lm/W
System efficiency 1720 Llm : 31 W (29 W LED module + 2 W driver) =
55 Llm
Cut-off Angle
The cut-off angle of luminaires is defined as the angle between the
horizontal plane and the point from which the light source is not directly
visible yet. The increased visual comfort offered by shielded light sources
is clearly perceivable. The Downlights of the αbet zono family of products,
for example, have a very good cut-off angle of 30°.
Half-peak divergence angle α
For accent lighting, the half-peak divergence angle α is given rather than
the beam spread angle. The half-peak divergence angle is defined as the
angle of the rotationally symmetrical luminous intensity distribution at
which the luminous intensity equals half of its maximum value.
The half-peak divergence angle is given as a full angle.

Definitions
Beam Spread Angle γ
The beam spread angle γ is defined as the angle at which the luminous
intensity drops to 1% of the maximum value lmax. It is measured from the
vertical (see luminous intensity distribution curve) and is an important
dimension in glare reducing measures.

UGR
The UGR method takes into account the layout of the luminaires in the
room and evaluates the glare produced by the entire lighting system
for a specific observer‘s position. WILA provides UGR values where the
observer’s position is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the luminaire and
the lamp/luminaire axis is parallel to the longer side of the room. The UGR
method is implemented on the basis of simple tables. A low UGR value
indicates that glare is negligible or non-existent.
Suitability examples maximum UGR values:
16 for drafting rooms,
19 for offices and control rooms,
22 for precision industrial tasks
25 for light industrial tasks and
28 for heavy industrial tasks.
Luminous intensity distribution
In order to give a clearer overview, the luminous intensity distribution
curves have been divided into groups. Shown are the planes from 0° to 180°
(red line) and from 90° to 270° (blue line). The 0° plane is on the right.
Beam chart
For accent luminaires beam charts are shown. The angle of the spread
out beam corresponds to the half-peak divergence angle of the luminous
intensity. Diameter and mean illuminance Em [lx] can be read from the
chart for each corresponding height.
Planning grid room
The chart is intended as a means of calculating the approximate illuminance
required for ceiling grids in rooms and corridors. For the 600 grid, the
illuminances should be multiplied by a factor of 0.9.

LED gear boxes
All LED luminaires shown in this brochure are sold without gear boxes to
provide you with the highest degree of flexibility. Two product lines with
distinct characteristics are available. The colour coded LED gear boxes are
coordinated with the corresponding luminaire to reduce errors during
electrical installation. The electrical connection is done via a plug connector
that is protected against polarity reversal, without load when switched off.
Premium version with loop-in function
WILA LED gear boxes, standard or DALI dimmable. High quality version
with gear box housing with loop-in function. Suitable for emergency
lighting with central battery.
Standard version without loop-in function
Cost effective alternative if loop-in function is not required, standard or
DALI dimmable. Suitable for emergency lighting with central battery.
Catalogue information and tolerance
Many luminaires are protected by comprehensive design registrations,
patents and trademark protections. We reserve the right to change material,
design and programme without notice. Statements are not warranted
characteristics. Photometric data is subject to a tolerance of +/- 10%.

F marking
All WILA luminaires are suitable for use in or on ceilings of normal
flammability and have so far been labelled with the F marking. With
the publication of the EN 60598 standard, date of issue 09/2009, this
marking is no longer applicable. After the end of the transitional phase on
12.04.2012, all luminaires without labelling are suitable for use in or on
a ceiling of normal flammability. Luminaires that do not fulfil the thermal
requirements are marked with a new pictogram.
Information about maintenance
The illuminance for a room/property must satisfy the published values
according to DIN 12464-1 over the entire period of usage; this corresponds
to the maintenance value. The electrical planner is responsible for
determining the maintenance factor dependent upon the lighting system
and the spatial conditions used and ensuring this with a maintenance
schedule. Further details about maintenance can be found in the

Concrete mounting boxes
Concrete mounting boxes allow the uninterrupted use of recessed
Downlights even in exposed concrete and plastered ceilings. Thus the
ceiling appearance remains clean, and alternative surface mounted
luminaires are not required. The two part metal housing holds its shape
and is designed for better heat transfer; it also allows accurate positioning
and fast installation while meeting all legally required fire prevention
regulations.
