EvaluationIn what ways does your media product Use, Develop or Challenge forms and conventions of real media Products?By Christopher Joyce
In what ways does your media product USE forms and conventions of real media products? My media products uses many forms and conventions of real media products. We:Used a dark setting with low key lightingUsed common media technologies, such as a tripod.Used people of unknown identity.
In what ways does your media product USE forms and conventions of real media products?Used suits, a common costume in thriller films.Used crime at the core of the narrative. The music fits the action on screen and suits the genre, whilst increasing tension and atmosphere.
In what ways does your media product DEVELOP forms and conventions of real media products? My Thriller developed some forms and conventions of media. Most thriller films that use a handheld camera do so for the duration of the film, for example Blair Witch Project or Cloverfield, and other thriller films hardly use it at all. My thriller developed this idea by combining the use of steady camera shots, using a tripod, and handheld camera. This allowed the setting and characters to be acknowledged whilst also creating the unsteady, panicked and tense effect brought about by the use of handheld cameras.
In what ways does your media product CHALLENGE forms and conventions of real media products?Normally in thriller’s, the protagonist is identified through the use typical shots, including low angle shots to make them seem powerful and dominant. The protagonist is also given a background, for example who he is, where he lives, and what he does for a living. My thriller does not do this, as I used a character who’s motives and previous actions are not known. In fact, I used a crane shot in the stair well in order to make the character look timid and vulnerable. As an audience, we do not know what is in the file, or if the man is running because he is scared, or because he is guilty of a crime to which he is being brought to justice. The unknown identity and questionable motives of the man challenge regular thriller conventions. When outside, we filmed in the day time so as to show how wanted and vulnerable the man is that he would be attacked in the daytime. This also goes against common thriller convention.
