- 10. We enjoy unnatural disasters, too! We have the usual construction miscues and the occasional broken water pipe. Our rule of Thumb: --if it can break – it will —if it has water – it will flood the library.
- 11. Digital preservation combines policies, strategies and actions to ensure access to reformatted and born-digital content regardless of the challenges of media failure and technological change. The goal of digital preservation is the accurate rendering of authenticated content over time. - 18. ADPNet currently contains 41 digital collections (“archival units”) from all seven member institutions Over 300 gigabytes harvested to date Network capacity: 1.5 terabytes (with plans to grow) Plenty of room for more collections More collections on the way, including audio and video files

- 20. Long term storage Dark archive – in reference to data storage, a “dark archive” is one that cannot be accessed by any users. Access to the data is either limited to a set few individuals or completely restricted to all. - 21. LOCKSS preserves all formats and genres in its original format and dynamically migrates the content to a newer format, if required, when the preserved content is needed for other uses. - #2: The Network of Alabama Academic Libraries (NAAL), a self-governed, statewide consortium representing the libraries of the public and private non-profit colleges and universities in Alabama. We have two statewide digitization programs: AlabamaMosaic which seeks to make our unique treasures accessible online and the Alabama Digital Preservation Network (ADPNet) which seeks to preserve locally created digital content. NAAL was established in 1984 to coordinate academic library resource sharing to assure that Alabama’s students, faculty, and other researchers would obtain the information needed for successful instruction and research. Its vision is based on the concept of an “Alabama Research Collection” with users having access to needed information regardless of where the material is held or the user is located. Its programs responds to these Janus Challenge topics: Acceleration of transition from print to electronic collections Importance of defining and building core collections Expansion of library partnerships and redefinition of the library marketplace for the licensing of electronic resources Development of mechanisms to archive print and digital content The best thing we do in NAAL is share poverty, and our hallmark seems always to be that we have little money. As a result we do a lot with very little new, ongoing funding. We believe our strategies have application for other groups of libraries facing the same challenges.
