EMMANUEL ONYEJEOSE, EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN, INTERNA- TIONAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE On behalf of all our stakeholders across the world, I humbly welcome you all to the Fifth edition of the Nigeria’s Alternative Energy Exposition, which is Nigeria’s largest gathering of power policy makers, manufacturers, investors and consumers all assembled here today in a bid towards brainstorming for best practices in clean, affordable and equitable energy sufficiency in the 21st Century. On this occasion the since expanded its horizon and thus the stakeholders’ forum in view of public concern on inadequate power generation output by the Independent Power Providers, (IPPs) and tariff harmonisation.This is why we are very delighted in welcoming powerful delegation from the Presidency which is determined to curb corruption at all levels in the new administration. We also warmly welcome representatives of the Ministries of Environment and Power for two main reasons.They have been very supportive in all the editions of this Conference since its kick-off in 2011 at this same venue but more importantly their teams who are representatives of various agencies are always with us and participating actively in our endeavours in finding suitable and viable technological solutions to stabilize energy generation and transmission options. Consumers and the present administration are desirous in their aspirations for adequate power output as they look forward to an end to epileptic energy supply across the country.We at NAEE have no reason to rationalise the huge drain on the scare foreign exchange reserve on empowering importers of generating sets which are not only unsafe but also a major source of environmental hazards. This is why we have consistently advocated alternative and friendly ecosystem energy generation capacity with technical support from our global stakeholders. Our delight is based on fact that the Federal Government is willing to listen to our varying complaints just as we applaud some rudimentary popular policy measures and pragmatic decisions in creating enabling operations environment to operate optimally.We understand that government is ready for accountability and committed to attracting equitable investment funds aimed at meeting infrastructure development challenges. Our delight is based on the fact that Africa has never recorded any single Foreign Direct Investment, (FDI) in the power generation industry in proceeding generations of up to the tune of more than the current investment outlay of more than three billion US dollars in one felt scoop.This is despite the scourges of the Boko Haram terrorism an abiding hope that before 2016, Nigeria’s power output will be more than adequate to meet the revised projected demand of over 10,000 MW.The earlier target 4, 000 MW before is quiteunrealistic. The interesting thing about the Nigerian reinventing its power sector is that it is based on investor confidence backed by prodigious purchasing power in Africa’s largest economy with its blotting middle class society and conspicuous consumption pattern.The onus of the investors’ confidence is anchored on the concept of alternative power generation envisaging the lighting up of 100 million of new users in urban and rural unmet community segments. We, at the Orgnaising Committe and Mathesis Consulting, UK are convinced like our collaborating local and international exhibitors that with available fossil fuels and renewable energy resources, Nigeria’s energy future is very bright. Our research findings indicate that investment capital and human resources are not necessarily lacking.What have been the banes in energy generation and utility are rightly attributable to poor articulation of policy objectives and unbridled corruption. It is not surprising that our consistent large South African team of exhibitors are once again with us here today.We give them a galloping round of applause. Similarly, we warmly greet the deans of diplomat- ic corps, from the US, Germany, France,Argentina and the UN agencies, just to mention a few. Finally, we salute the courage of our long standing collaborating partners, the African Sustainable Energy Alternative, (AFSEA) and the Southern African Alternative Energy Association, (SAAEA) which have been very supportive in our clarion calls for making clean energy available at affordable rates in every rural areas, especially the off grid communities. The call to save electricity and to reduce electricity consumption has been prompted by Nigeria’s traumatised power sector, the global need to reduce our country’s carbon footprint, and the need to save money as a result of the economic downturn and rising electricity prices. 12:00 Launch of Solar Empowered schools in Karashi Secondary school, Karashi Abuja Solar Empowered School is a youth initiative of African Sustainable Energy Association which focuses on the use of sustainable technology to improve academic performance of Africa school children, by providing them with solar lanterns and home studies training.
