NARRATIVE THEORY
BY LOUI S TUCKE R
TODOROV'S NARRATIVE
STRUCTURE
Todorov thought that most
story’s or plot lines follow
the same pattern.
This is 5 stages in his
pattern:
Todorov made a basic structure for all film plots, he said that films and
programmes start with an ‘equilibrium’, this is where the story is most
calm(where not much is happening), then something ‘disrupts the
equilibrium’, this is where the story is unsettling and not as calm. This is
then followed by another section which is full of peace and harmony (a
new equilibrium).
EXAMPLE OF TODOROV’S THEORY
Film: Jennifer’s Body
1.Equilibrium- Jennifer is a high school student, Jennifer is
the attractive girl who gets all the boys.
Needy is a nerd.
2.Disruption of the equilibrium Jennifer keeps going away with boys, but
this once she returns as a demon.
Recognition of the disruption Jennifer starts to kill all the boys at her high
school, after killing all of them she starts to
hunt Needy’s boyfriend.
Repairing the damage caused by
disruption
Needy tries to stop Jennifer from killing her
boyfriend.
New equilibrium Needy has created problems for herself as
she fails to save her boyfriend and ends up
in a mental institution due to no one
believing her about Jennifer being a
demon.
PROPP’S CHARACTER TYPES AND
NARRATIVE FUNCTIONS
Vladimir Propp studied hundred of
stories and found they contained 8
types of characters and 31 functions
that are in the majority of them.
Some of the 31 functions are:
-The hero is stopped from doing
something
-The murderer/killer learns something
about the victim
-The murderer/killer is stopped
-The hero is rewarded for his actions
Etc…
EXAMPLE OF PROPP’S THEORY
Film: Horns
Character Type Person in the film
Hero Ig Perrish
Villain Lee Tourneau
Donor Dale Williams
Helper Glenna Shepherd
Princess Merrin Williams
Princess’ Father Dale Williams
False hero Terry Perish
