ADDING INTEGERS
Adding with like sign
Rules in Adding Integers with Like Signs
 To add two or more negative numbers,
get the sum of their absolute values and
prefix the minus sign.
 To add two or more positive
numbers, get the sum of their
absolute values.
Examples:
1) (-5) + (-4) = -9
2) (-6) + (-5) = -11
3) (-7) + (-3) = -10
1) 5 + 4 = 9
2) 6 + 5 = 11
3) 7 + 3 = 10
Identify the opposite,
adjacent and hypotenuse
of the right angled
triangle.
Label the Triangle Sides
Use SOH CAH TOA to help
you decide which ratio to
use (sin, cos, tan).
Choose your Ratio
Applying the
formula
ADDING INTEGERS
Adding with
different sign
Rule in Adding Integers with Different Signs
To add two numbers with different
signs, get the difference of their
absolute values and prefix the sign
of the number having larger
absolute value.
Examples :
1) 12 + (-3) = 9
2) (-5) + 6 = 1
3) 2 + (-5) = -3
4) 12 + (-8) =4
5) (-21) + 6 = -5
6) (-8) + 15 = 7
Choosing the Trigonometric Ratio
Add the following integers using
the rules.
Students are not allowed to use
calculator or any gadgets to
compute.
Direction:
A. Give the sum of the following.
1) (-5) + (-7) =
2) (-10) + 18 =
3) 9 + (-15) =
4) (-11) + 11 =
5) (-8) + (-9) =
6) 30 + 0 =
7) 7 + 8 =
8) -6 + (-8) =
9) 4 + (-21) =
10) -16 + 8 =
Calculate your answer
B. Supply the missing number to make the statement true.
1) 8 + ___ = 5
2) -11 + __ = 8
3) 16 + (-9) = __
4) 24 + __ = 17
5)28 + __ = -32
6) -50 + 50 = __
7) 2 + (-20) = __
8) __ + 15 = -20
9) 100 + __ = 10
10) 500 + (-100) = __
C. Give the sum of the following.
1) (-8) + (-17) + (-26) =
2) 10 + (-26) + 88 =
3) 7 + 8 + (-56) =
4) (-6) + (-9) + 50 =
5) (-5) + (-21) + (-29) =
6) (-26) + (-29) + (-42) =
7) 30 + (-39) + (-13) =
8) (-60) + 100 + (-40) =
9) (-68) + 30 + 150 =
10) 80 + (-10) + (-15) =
