The tradition of nativity scenes originated in the Middle Ages when St. Francis of Assisi created the first scene in 1223 in Italy. By the 12th century, nativity scenes appeared in Polish churches depicting Jesus, Mary, Joseph and other biblical figures. Over centuries, the scenes became more elaborate with movable figurines and references to everyday life. In the 19th century, the Szopka tradition developed in Krakow where highly decorated crib scenes displayed a craftsman's skills.
