- 3. What is Natura 2000? May 1992 European Union governments adopted legislation designed to protect the most seriously threatened habitats and species across Europe. ( Habitats Directive + Birds Directive ) 25.000 protected sites 590.000 protected species 1.9 GB Database ~50 National shape files ~40 Tabular access databases
