SDN concept
The physical separation of the network control plane from the forwarding plane,
and where a control plane controls several devices. Thus enabling the network
control to become directly programmable and the underlying infrastructure to be
abstracted for applications and network services.
SDN Application: path computation,
resource pool, self healing, DDOS
protection,fault prediction, network
optimization, etc
SDN Controller: to program, orchestrate,
control and manage the network
resources through software
Network functions perform the transport
and the processing of data packets
according to the decisions made by the
SDN control layer
Data plane shall be able to used existing
network technology such as routing (e.g.
OSPF.BGP), MPLS, ACL, QoS, L2VPN,
L3VPN, IP transport, Ethernet transport,
etc

Current Network
Consists of dedicated
equipment with high-
functionality for each
necessary function.
TM Research & Development
Silo-like development
Vendor lock-in
Initiative of functional enhancement
is taken by vendors. Even small
function addition can affect whole
network system.
Oligopolists
Resource Inefficiency
Unable to share unused resources
between functions, locations,
hardware units, and so on ...
Silos are great for
developing technology
but destructive to
service provider.
TM Research & Development
Gap between the Service Providers and Vendors
SDN & NFV is now attracting the industry to change the development style of carrier
networks but there still is a large gap between the service providers and the vendors.
