There are two types of networking
media
Wired
And
Wireless
Lets discuss these in details one by
one. Nex

 Ethernet cables
Has eight wires
Connects various devices such as PCs, routers, and
switches within a LAN
Advantage:
Less power consumption
Drawback:
Requires Ethernet adapter card on the motherboard to
connect the Ethernet cable
Types:
Crossover cable : designed to connect two computers
without a hub or router
Straight-through cable: It’s both ends are identical, it
is used to connect computer to a router, or a switch.
NextPrev
 Coaxial cables
Is used in transmission of videos, communication signals, and is
maily used by the cable television industry to connect TVs to a cable
TV service or ste top box
It consists of central copper wire surrounded by insulation and a
shield of braided wire.
Advantage:
It has high bandwidth and greater transmission capacity
Relatively inexpensive
Better protection against electromagnetic disturbances
Disadvantage:
High installation cost
High maintenance cost
Types:
Baseband coaxial cable: quick transmission of a single signal at a
time. Mainly used for LANs
Broadband coaxial cable: multiple signals at the same time. Used
for longer distances. Nex

Pre
v
 Optical Fiber cable
Large capacity to transfer data
Very high speed
The glass threads are capable of transforming
data converted into light signals at extremely high
speed
High resistant to signal interference
Provides better transmission by providing high
bandwidth
Disadvantage: It is fragile and high
maintenance cost.

BLUETOOTH
 It uses low power radio waves.
 It enables short-range communication between
phones, computers and other network devices.
 Mainly used for PANs with maximum range of
upto 240 meters depending on the version of
Bluetooth used
 Bluetooth icon indicates that a device is enabled
with Bluetooth.

INFRARED TECHNOLOGY
 This technology is used for short range communication which covers
approximately 5 meters of distance.
 Majorly used to exchange information between computers, cellular
telephones and faxes
 It transfer data by emitting infrared waves through infrared LEDs
 It can establish communication only between two devices at a time.
 These signals cannot penetrate through walls or other obstructions.
 These work only in the direct line of sight.
 Infrared waves or signals are focused into a narrow beams from end to end
using a plastic lens, which is converted into electric signals by receiver.
 E.g. Remote Control
Nex

v
WI-FI
 Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity
 Used for LANs
 Uses radio waves to send information
 This technology establishes a secure, reliable and fast wireless
connection between electronic devices and internet.
 Device requires wireless adapters to capture Wi-Fi signals
 Advantages:
Without any wire it can establish connection
Relatively inexpensive
Can be accessed where installation of cables is not posssbible
It supports multiple connection of devices
Disadvantages:
High power consumption
Slower than wired medium
Fragile to noise interference
