This document defines networking and describes several common types of networks. It defines networking as the construction and use of a network, including physical components, protocols, and policies. It then describes local area networks (LANs) as connecting devices over short distances, such as within an office building, and wide area networks (WANs) as spanning larger physical distances, including the Internet. The document provides examples of LANs in homes and businesses connecting to the Internet WAN via broadband modems. It also briefly defines several other common network types, including wireless LANs, metropolitan area networks, campus area networks, storage area networks, and system/cluster area networks.
