Wireless local area networks (WLANs) allow devices to connect to a local area network through wireless communication, eliminating the need for network cables. Norman Abramson developed the first wireless computer network at the University of Hawaii. WLANs offer flexibility in installation, lower costs due to reduced need for wiring, and mobility as users can access the network from anywhere within range. However, WLANs can be more expensive than wired networks, have security issues, and are sometimes less reliable than wired connections.
