                          11:00AM: NETWORKING
GREG RIEHL, RN, BSCN, MA – ABORIGINAL NURSING STUDENT ADVISOR, SIAST
ICEBREAKER
OBJECTIVES

• Knowing who you are, where you want to be.

• What is Networking?
  • It is about connections and about people knowing us, liking
    us, trusting us

• Relationships
  • You need to get out there and talk to everyone
THE GREG

• A brief history
TYPES OF NETWORKING

•Social
•Professional
•Online
•Offline
•Work life balance
•Your connections influence who you are

•Anyone can search ‘networking’ I am not
here to do that…

                                     5
GOOD AND BAD NETWORKING

• You all know how to use the internet.
• You all know how to go out with your friends.

• Is that all
• networking is?
VALUES AND BELIEFS

     “Whether you think you
can or you think you can’t . . .
you’re right”
                           •Henry Ford
SHARE

• It’s all about connections

• Don’t isolate yourself

• Give at work, at home, and always.

• There are givers, takers and waiters...

• Volunteer, and if you are voluntold, use it to your
  advantage.
KNOWING WHO YOU ARE

• Vacationers, prisoners, keeners

• Describes learning and participatory styles, and
relates to how you work at your job

• Surround yourself with like-minded people in and
  out of work
GIVING

• It used to be that we held on to things.

• Now it is all about giving

• Similar to good communication there is a sender, or
  a giver, and a receiver.

• Know what you are sending and get feedback from
the receiver - and remember to check in…
VALUE

• The more you know, the more valuable you are

• What do you have to offer, this is part of the giving

• Make people want and need you

• Do you have potential?

• Being able to deal with ambiguity is an asset
VALUE

        “You will either step forward
in growth or you will step back into
safety”
                               • Maslow
GET SMART

• Networking goals

• A Goal, or an indicator, must be SMART:
• Specific
• Measurable
• Achievable (attainable)
• Repeatable (Realistic)
• Time bound
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN
       YOU GROW UP?
CONNECTIONS

• Don’t slam the door or burn the bridge

• DON’T BE AN ASSHOLE
YOU ARE YOUR OWN BRAND

• This is who you are!

• Share this with your current colleagues

• Keep your contact list(s) up to date

• Go outside the box, keep them guessing, be
  innovative.

PLATINUM RULE

• Golden rule

• Platinum rule

• Trusting relationships

• Give more than people expect, never expect more
  than you give

• Always leave on a high note, and leave anyplace
  better than when you arrived
YOU ARE A LEADER

• Your network connects you to others, but also
  connects others to each other

• This is your value, and it is enhanced when your
network trusts you and your recommendations.

• Follow-up

• Allow networking to happen, but make sure you
plant the seed and nurture the relationship.
NETWORKING IS WORKING

• Stay in touch with your mentors

• Stay in touch with you clients

• Spread the word

• Don’t give up
MAKE POSITIVE CONNECTIONS
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

Editor's Notes

  • #4: If people like you they’ll listen to you, but if they trust you they’ll do business with you.” Zig Ziglar
  • #6: Do you work to live or live to work?
  • #8: Your actions follow your attitudes and beliefs
  • #9: Overall there are net givers and net takers, this relates to your style, vacationer, keener, prisoner, etc.
  • #10: http://karenwise.wordpress.com/2009/10/06/what-kind-of-learner-are-you/ http://learningthrufun.wordpress.com/2009/05/08/kinds-of-participants/
  • #12: Can you focus on one thing for a long time and get the job done. We are so used to ‘multitasking’ that the new, best trait to have might just be focused on getting one thing done well, at a time.
  • #14: Goals can help measure RESULTS A Goal, or an indicator, must be SMART : S pecific M easurable A chievable (attainable) R epeatable (Realistic) T ime bound
  • #18: Golden rule – do unto others what you would have them do to you, in other words, treat other people how ‘you’ want to be treated. This doesn’t always work…. Platinum rule – do unto others what they want to have done to them, in other words, treat other people how ‘they’ want to be treated.
  • #19: Don’t just pick the fruit, share it and give it away.
  • #21: I try and make positive connections whenever possible, these are some of the organizations I am connected with, and a great colleague of mine, John. John and I have made a pact that we will try and incorporate each other into our presentations, this works well to spread the good word and work that you are doing, and by sharing you will receive in the future.
