newsbubble pull information into your sphere of attention
newsbubble Conceptually, you're in your own bubble in a fast-flowing stream of news information containing various currents of data. You need a way to pull the information in which you are interested closer to you, into your bubble You set the parameters for what pops through your attention barrier, and how the information stream is flowing around you
newsbubble How does it work? Gives users a set of tools to define their attention barrier Mixture of sliders (to filter by source, degrees of separation, popularity, media type, date & locality) and orderable lists (to filter by topic) Slider settings saveable and portable across platforms A bottom-up approach to enabling users to define their own spheres of attention, rather than having to consume news in the order that someone else has decided for them
newsbubble: sliders The sliders effectively set the force-based parameters to attract or repel items to your sphere me/them = stuff from your social media friends vs stuff from everyone else popular/unpopular = stuff with many links to it vs stuff with few (so you can slide it to unpopular to preserve the serendipity of idle browsing) text/multimedia – does what it says on the tin local/global – set the degree of localness you want official/social – receive items curated or published by trusted sources, or items from your social media contacts recent/older – set the timeframe for the information
newsbubble: topics Simply an orderable list of topics You order them by interest. Delete the ones you are not interested in. For example, I'd delete sport :).
newsbubble: UI Uses a force-based visualisation to arrange the news information streams that lie outside your bubble, based on your parameters, so you can see what's nearing your attention. Each individual item is expandable to see the full text/AV/whatever contained inside. Once items are close enough they “pop” into your bubble and are automatically partially expanded so you can read the headline/brief intro etc.
newsbubble: back of the napkin sketch (for web) plus we'd need save/reset/refresh buttons naturally the mobile/tablet version would be smaller / divided into config screens
newsbubble: thanks thanks for your interest :) I'm at http://twitter.com/pindec
