news values/
newsworthiness
in science writing
what makes REGULAR things newsworthy:
• impact (the number of people who will be affected by
the story)
• timeliness (get the scoop here first!)
• prominence (people/things already seen as more
important)
• proximity (things closer to us are perceived as more
relevant)
• bizarreness (news of the weird)
• conflict (“if it bleeds, it leads”)
• currency (stories related to topics that are already in
the spotlight)
what makes SCIENCE newsworthy:
• TOPICS (health, medicine, behavioral science)
• SURPRISE (WOW) FACTOR: (novelty, overturns
previous findings – suitable for cocktail parties)
• RELEVANCE (scientific, political, economic, social,
cultural, or ethical; news events that need a scientific
explanation)
• USABILITY (advice for daily life: medical, technical,
etc.)
• POTENTIAL HARM (rare or extraordinary risk,
probability of damage)
• SCIENTIFIC INFLUENCE (influential scientists or
institutions get more coverage)
