Chapter 11 How Is Sound Produced, Propagated and Perceived?
We humans communicate with each other through sounds. It enables us to send across a massage to someone, be it a comment, a joke or a cry for help. It aids us in letting out our Emotions and a facilities an effective transfer of information, making it a channel for our enjoyment and enhancement. But what is exactly is a sound?
SOUND PRODUCTION , PROPAGATION AND PERCEPTION Sound Waves Production Sound Propagation of Sound Perception of Sound Picth
SOUND WAVES Sound waves carry energy, as do all waves. This means that the source of the sound must supply energy. Playing an instrument for an extended period of time is also very tiring. Sound waves are longitudinal.
PRODUCTION OF SOUND Sound is produced when a vibration causes pressure variation in a medium. The human voice uses several types of sound production and modification mechanics.
PROPAGATION OF SOUND A Medium is a material to travel through. Sound waves can travel though solids, liquids, and gases but mot through a vacuum. Reflection and diffraction have large effects on the sound you hear.
PERCEPTION OF SOUND
The ear is an amazing sound detector. - it can detect sound waves - sensitive to an enormous range of wave amplitude - a complex sense organ
HOW TO DETECT A SOUND? Pitch Loudness Tone Quality
PITCH the PITCH of a sound is the perception of highness and lowness of a sound. Sound frequency is the number of sound waves that passes through a point in a certain amount of time. The Hertz (Hz) is a unit to measure frequency a so pitch is measured in hertz this is called the audio frequency range.
LOUDNESS Loudness of a sound is determined mainly by the amplitude of the sound wave. Intensity is a defined by a physical quantity that defends on the amplitude of a sound. Cause pain and damaged to the ear is called threshold of pain .
TIMBRE The timbre of a sound is used to distinguish between two different sounds that have the same pitch and loudness. Pure tone is a simplest wave form have a soft ,pleasant tone quality and sinosoidal.
