10. Summary
• Attitudes
• Feelings
• Emotions
Although the term nonverbal communication
includes almost everything from which meaning can be
derived except verbal (written and oral)
communication, the most important aspects of
nonverbal communication behaviour are use of space,
time, kinetics, symbols, and paralanguage.
A. Proxemics
• Intimate Zone
• Personal Zone
• Business and Social Zone
• Public Zone
B. Territory
• The amount of territory we control:
• How well protected our territory is: and
• The degree of access we have to the territory of others.
• How much time is allotted.
• What kind of time is allotted.
• Who waits for whom and for how long.
A. Open And Closed Expressions
1. Eye Contact
2. Body Rhythms:
3. Posture
B. Gestures
Gestures which leave a POSITIVE IMPRESSION
● Nodding of head to say “Yes” or “No” to something
● (This makes your answers clear)
● Raising of eyebrows to show surprise.
● Movement of hands while talking to make your ideas more
impressive.
● Keeping a sober expression if the topic is serious
● Smiling when expressing your thanks or on being
appreciated.
● Avoid bad habits & mannerisms – like Scratching.
Shifting on your seat, shaking your legs, picking your
nose, etc.
All nonverbal communication is symbolic in the
sense that the nonverbal language stands for concepts and
ideas in the same way the verbal language does. But certain
aspects of nonverbal -communication are deliberately
symbolic in that we use those aspects to establish a
particular identity or to communicate a specific idea
consistently. In this culture the best-Known examples
include the obscene gesture of the upraised middle finger,
the "V' for victory (or peace, depending" on your
generation), and the clenched fist representing power and
solidarity. When the symbol mimics the appearance of the
things or concept it signifies, it is called a Sign.
The last aspect of nonverbal communication we will
mention is paralanguage. Paralanguage consists of
nonverbal vocal elements such as laughing, crying, throat
clearing, inflection, volume, tone, rate, pitch, and
enunciation. In short, any sound or variation in sound
patterns is paralanguage because it communicates a
nonverbal message.
● Clothes
● Hair
● Jewellery
● Cosmetics, or Makeup
● Automobiles
● Choice and location of our houses
● Geography of our living spaces
Many people feel a little guilty about learning to
read and control nonverbal behaviour. They think that
consciously reading someone’s nonverbal cues constitutes
an invasion of privacy, and that controlling their own
nonverbal signals id a misrepresentation of their true
selves. But understanding and using nonverbal
communication more effectively has a valid goal: to
improve interpersonal relationships by understanding the
attitudes and feelings that accompany verbal
communication.
● Make yourself comfortable with the other. Avoid being too
close or too far away physically. (Within two feet is a
comfortable range.)
● Be relaxed and attentive. To gain acceptance lean slightly
toward the other. Avoid slouching or sitting rigidly.
● Maintain frequent eye contact. Avoid staring, glaring, or
looking away.
