NOTEBOOK FOR ELA
1. THEME- a message from the author, a statement about life, or people in general.
Strategies for Interpreting Texts- finding THEMES
As you read a text,
1. Notice problems, struggles, and conflicts you see the characters facing. Chances are
these are the seeds of a theme.
2. Start to think about what this text might be saying about these themes- broad or general
ideas, perhaps, like “power is bad” or “love is challenging.”
3. As the scenes crop up with these themes, closely read them a few times, unpacking
exactly what the scenes are showing us about the theme ideas you are exploring.
4. To help analyze a scene, think about:
-what exact emotions the characters feel
-what the effects of the problem are
-what the causes are
-what lessons are revealed.
5. Track what happens to characters- who succeeds, who fails?
6. As the book ends- what lessons does the character learn? Are these universal?
7. Look across your thinking- what categories do you see? Repetition? Contradictions?
2. SETTING- Where the storytakes place and the time period.
In some stories, the details of a setting do more than create a backdrop for events. A setting
can affect how characters live and what they do, value, and believe. It can even create conflicts
that they must endure.

How to fix a run on sentence:
Here’s a run on:
“I really hope that today’s ride isn’t like last year’s I’m also really hoping all goes well in the
scrimmage.”
See how it could be two separate sentences if you just split this after “year’s” by placing a
period there? You could do that OR you could just add “and” there. Get it?
