8. Samples from Forum Discussions/DialoguesA.TOPIC: Choosing the nursing professionThe issue about health care is very important around the world but a lot of countries haven't a good and correct health care and this is a serious problem for all societies. I decided to study nursing because I want to become an excellent nurse to help people in those countries. When I finished my studies of nursing I would like travel to underdeveloped countries. I think I should think more about it, because I was too involved in daily matters and I realized that I haven't thought about what I want be like in the future. Thanks for your reminding me of that important thing!! Let's tackle that issue together!!!(The texts are slightly modified to protect the participants’ personal information and to be made a little more “readable” than the originals.)
B.TOPIC: On Smoking by Nurses and Preventing Health Disorders Caused by SmokingNowadays, Japanese smoking rate is decreasing. However, the number of young female smokers is increasing, while the rate of adult male smoking is decreasing. I think this is mainly caused by the social advance of women. It takes stress very much to work insociety. Among others, the work of nurses is a stressful job, and the smoking rate of the nurses seems to be high. This becomes a problem in society, but nurses should quit smoking by any means.I read your message and am interested in it very much! I don't smoke but some of my friends smoke. But I confess I have sometimes tried smoking when they were smoking. I don't like cigarettes anyway and I think that it should be extinguished. I also think that the Government is benefiting from it. Why are other drugs illegal? And why are cigarettes not? I think that the nurses mustbea model andtheymust not smoke in the workplace. One of the nursing function is inculcate health habits into people. (The texts are slightly modified to protect the participants’ personal information and to be made a little more “readable” than the originals.)
C.TOPIC: Necessity of Balanced Meals for HealthDo you care about your own diet? Diet is a necessity for our body. We can't live without diet. Poor diet could lead to lifestyle diseases such as arteriosclerosis, diabetes and so on. I read your posting. I think that you have reason. But having a balanced food doesn't always depend on us. For example, in Spain, though I imagine it is also similar in other countries, the majority of workplaces have tight timetables that make us difficult to have time to eat a balanced meal. We sometimes have to eat in restaurants or we have to eat fast and bad food. I think we should not work on this matter too hard. It is important to keep having good diet, but also not to aspire after perfection. For example it is okay if we start by trying not to eat something between meals, try to have a salad and so on. It is important to continue even a small thing everyday.(The texts are slightly modified to protect the participants’ personal information and to be made a little more “readable” than the originals.)
D.TOPIC: Different Curricula at Different Nursing UniversitiesI am a freshman and I decided to study nursing because I want to work with the people, and I love to help people. Also I like nursing because it is a short career and practice. I have different subjects; the subjects that are relatively difficult are Biochemistry and Anatomy. All teachers are good and we could understand their explanations. The best subject for me is Basic Care, in this subject I learn techniques that a nurse use. Another subject that I like is microbiology because I learn the illness and the bacteria. What is your favorite subject? My favorite subject is Mental Health, because I like the way of teaching in that class. This class is very easy-to-follow. As a matter of course, I like Basic Care, too. I think that the study of nursing is difficult. But I am interested in the mechanism of the body. I always think that human body is amazing. (The texts are slightly modified to protect the participants’ personal information and to be made a little more “readable” than the originals.)
