Requirements from SNOWBALLS to OCW     The primary objectives of OCW materials: Learner's use for his/her study on the subject of his/her interest Instructor's use for the enhancement and improvement of his/her lectures SNOWBALLS’ intention to use the OCW content and tools: Self-navigated, self-learning English content for Japanese students who received English education as a second language Tools, methods and materials for instructors or developers for their class use and materials developments  Any other content, tools, etc. are useful for SNOWBALLS' modules.
OCW Materials Suitable for SNOWBALLS Modules   # Basics: Glossary, expressions, basic knowledge, etc Engineering basics (common requirement) Discipline- oriented Issue/ problem- oriented Basics Basics Advanced level &  application Practice project,  seminar, etc. Advanced level &  application Math, physics, etc. # Eng. & sci. writing (paper, essay, report) ・・・ Mech. Eng. # EECS # Global literacy basics (Thinking and  communication skills) ・・・ Environment # Bio-eng. # : selected as appropriate
General Observation on the OCW Materials Lectures with a key word “English” are categorized; Linguistic studies in the field of literature  English communication and writing The second category is broken down depending on target users:  Native students to build a foundation of a citizen and academic life in that nation International students to build a university life Courses related to "global" are basically aimed at local culture studies Some courses are to develop communication and leadership skills from the global point of view.   
OCW Courses in Japan Usable for SNOWBALLS   UT-OCW Courses dealing with English aspects     Language information science, International relations, etc Their materials are not appropriate to English learning.  Directly usable elements  Lecture notes of Math IB: Differential and Integral Calculus. Tokyo Institute of Technology: A series of Academic Writing, “English for Engineers, English for Science,  English Presentation Training for Materials Science and Engineering I & II, Fundamentals of Technical English for Electrical and Electronic Engineers,” for EE students. Combining Japanese and OCW Materials Two methods for combining the existing or newly developed Japanese parts with OCW materials in SNOWBALLS :  Direct linking via URLs ・ Japanese pieces and corresponding OCW materials appropriately linked via URLs on piece by piece basis Full integration by remixing ・ Some appropriate size of English content and  the corresponding Japanese guide and explanation for this merged  (remixed) into one new piece    as an easy-to-handle unit.    
Functional Consideration   Multi-lingual editing or remixing functions: Organizational support from each institute or  its association such as OCW is needed  for expert level processing Reinforcement for correct understanding:   Many  cases need the supplemental explanations in Japanese added to original English materials for users’ correct understanding.   Development of multi-lingual contents and tools from the needs of global and foreign language education will be one of study themes of  OCWC and AOCW.
Summary The development of self-navigated, self-learning web-based tool SNOWBALLS:  We employed a user (student)-led development style,     by launching a new project course,  Identified a list of unique game-base features and functional requirements, and successfully demonstrated a prototype, which potentiality is highly evaluated.   Discussion on how to best utilize the OCW content materials for SNOWBALLS: We presented general requirements from SNOWBALLS to OCW,  listed the search results of lecture materials meeting with these conditions on the OCW sites such as MIT, the Open University, and some Japanese universities, and  presented two methods for combining to produce a mixed Japanese and English content,  Future issues:  Further development and enhancement of SNOWBALLS functions and teaching/learning content, and Study on how to incorporate OCW materials in the system. Combining Japanese and OCW Materials Two methods for combining the existing or newly developed Japanese parts with OCW materials in SNOWBALLS : Direct linking via URLs ・ Japanese pieces and corresponding OCW materials appropriately linked via URLs on piece by piece basis Full integration by remixing ・ Some appropriate size of English content and the corresponding Japanese guide and explanation for this merged (remixed) into one new piece    as an easy-to-handle unit.

Functional Consideration Multi-lingual editing or remixing functions: Organizational support from each institute or its association such as OCW is needed for expert level processing Reinforcement for correct understanding: Many cases need the supplemental explanations in Japanese added to original English materials for users’ correct understanding.   Development of multi-lingual contents and tools from the needs of global and foreign language education will be one of study themes of OCWC and AOCW.

Summary The development of self-navigated, self-learning web-based tool SNOWBALLS: We employed a user (student)-led development style,    by launching a new project course, Identified a list of unique game-base features and functional requirements, and successfully demonstrated a prototype, which potentiality is highly evaluated. Discussion on how to best utilize the OCW content materials for SNOWBALLS: We presented general requirements from SNOWBALLS to OCW, listed the search results of lecture materials meeting with these conditions on the OCW sites such as MIT, the Open University, and some Japanese universities, and presented two methods for combining to produce a mixed Japanese and English content, Future issues: Further development and enhancement of SNOWBALLS functions and teaching/learning content, and Study on how to incorporate OCW materials in the system.
