old file system/traditional file sysytem
DEFINITION
A filesystem is the methods and data structures that an
operating system uses to keep path of files on a disk or
partition; that is, the way the files are organized on the
disk. the word is also used to refer to a partition or disk
that is used to store the files or the type of the file system
2ND DEFINITION
• File system. Alternatively referred to as file management and sometimes
abbreviated as FS, a file system is a method of organizing and
retrieving files from a storage medium, such as a hard drive. File
systems usually consist of sensitivity pirated into groups called directories.
OLD FILE SYSTEM:
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF TRADITIONAL FILE
ORGANIZATION
• Advantages:
1:Data Security:
• Traditional file organization has security advantages over electronic
filing.
2:Complexity:
Traditional filing systems are less complex than electronic systems, which
can make it easier for untrained people to access and manipulate data.
ADVANTAGES
3:Access Time:
4:Simple to Use:
The traditional filing system is very simple to set up and use.
5:Minimal Investment:
If you're using a traditional filing system, you also don't have to make
an investment in a software database that may include an upfront
purchase and ongoing licensing fees.
DISADVANTAGES
• 1) Data Redundancy:
• Since each application has its own data file, the same data may
have to be recorded and stored in many files. For example, personal
file and payroll file, both contain data on employee name.
• 2) Data Inconsistency:
Data redundancy leads to data inconsistency especially when data is
to be updated. Data inconsistency occurs due to the same data items
that appear in more than one file do not get updated simultaneously in
each and every file
• The reports produced by the file processing system are program
dependent, which means if any change in the format or structure
of data and records in the file is tobe made, the programs have to
modified similarly. Also, a new program will have to be developed
to produce a new report.
4) Program Dependence:
• 5) Limited Data Sharing:
• There is limited data sharing possibilities with the traditional file
system. Each application has its own private files and users have
little choice to share the data outside their own applications
