Topic: “SOCIAL SCIENCELABORATORY”
INTRODUCTION
Every subject has its specialties and to make teaching effective it is essential to
create an environment accordingly. Just as we require separate laboratories for teaching
different science subjects, we need a special room for teaching of social science also.
The social science teacher has to make use of various teaching aids while transacting the
curriculum. It may be a model, globe, a picture, a chart, maps, film strips, samples of
pass books, balance sheet, etc…To keep them in safe custody and to ensure easy
availability it is necessary to have a separate room for social science. The special room is
known as the social science laboratory, which is meant to create the proper
environment that would stimulate learning.
There is no specific area for social science laboratory. The only requirement is that it
would be spacious enough to contain all the instructional aids and to accommodate the
students of a class. it will have to be larger than an ordinary classroom. It should have a
few basic essentials such as good lightning and ventilation adequate number of
convenient book cases and other storage facilities, tables and chairs to accommodate
the students and teachers who are to work in it. The laboratory should be so be
arranged as to provide an inviting and stimulating atmosphere. It should look like a
place where one is expected to do things rather than to recite routine formal lessons.
Need for social science laboratory
The effectiveness of the social science lesson will be very much increased if all
these aids together with other supporting materials and facilities are made available for
use in a separate laboratory. The laboratory can be used for serving the following
functions.
1. Creates a special environment
A special laboratory creates a special environment conducive for
effective curriculum transaction it would also create interest among learners. A special
room creates a proper social climate which helps in developing a stimulating learning
environment.
2. Ensures proper and safe storing of audio visual aids
The teacher needs various kinds of audio visual aids fir teaching social
science. It has not only be procured but also be kept under safe custody. A special room will
help as in serving this purpose.
3. Makes all aids readily available at one place
If the different audio visual aids some of which may be hard wares
stored in different places the social science teacher have to get these collected from the various
places while teaching. If all these are stored and arranged systematically in social science
laboratory the pupils can be brought to this spot and the items can be demonstrated as and
when required in the course of the class.
4. Save time and energy
If all the audio visual aids are available in the social science room itself, it will
save valuable time and energy of the teacher.
5. Creates and maintains an effective atmosphere
A laboratory well-equipped with equipment and material for teaching social science
will help in creating and maintaining a much needed conducive atmosphere for social science
learning.
6. Facilitates the various use of teaching methods
In social science various teaching methods like problem solving method, project
method, play way method, discussion method are used. All these methods require special
articles or specific seating arrangements which is possible only in a special room.
Necessary requirement for a social sciencelaboratory.
The following equipments are need for a social science laboratory
1. Furniture:
The necessary items of furniture in a social science laboratory are working tables, chairs,
shelves, stands, map-racks, admiral, black board and white board etc…the tables should be
small and flat and these could be easily rearranged for group work. Seating arrangements
should make for comfort, health and efficiency of the pupil. Teacher’s desk should also be
movable so that it may be used as the common classroom table or for the purpose of
demonstrations. A permanent projection screen may be fixed above the black board, which can
be easily lowered for projection work at any time.
2. Aids and equipments:
A social science laboratory should process the following essential equipments
I. Maps: historical, economic, geographical, political, social and pictorial map of all
countries.
II. Charts: different types of charts-generating chart, flow chart, tabulation chart,

because relevant cuttings and pictures, cartoons, newspaper report related to the
curriculum material being handled in the classroomcan be displayed on the bulletin
board with a caption or study questions for pupil
CONCLUSION
It is of almost importance that the social science laboratory becomes the hub of
social science teaching and related activities in a school. It will enable the teacher to
produce dynamic and lively interaction among physical things and students. Above all it
should be placed where ideas can come to life and be illustrated and activated, which
will help to make the abstract ideas and experiences more lively and realistic. The
impression thus gained will sustain forever and hence will be transferrable to all related
walks of life. Let it become an interesting and exiting centre for activity for all students
and teachers of social science in a school.
