INTRODUCTION
A Social Studies room or what a few subject specialists would like to
term as social studies laboratory, fully equipped with modern aids, will
provide pleasant social and co-operative environment where the teachers and
the learners feel homely. It is must for every school. Even the government
recognizes the importance of a separate room for subjects in physical
science, but on account of financial and other considerations they consider a
separate room is needed for other subjects, its need is no less in the subject
of social studies. It is generally seen that there are certain institution which
no doubt purchase the equipment of social studies but lock them in some
store and do not make any use of them. As a result it becomes obsolete and
useless on account of non use. In case the teacher has a separate room, there
are chances of making use of this material on a large scale. So here, we may
discuss about the importance and organization of social science room.
IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL SCIENCE ROOM
According to Ghate, “every subject which is recognized as deserving
of study in a school should have a room of its own”. Following arguments
can be given for a Social studies room.
1. Teaching not confined only to classroom: Teaching of Social studies is not
confined only to classroom teaching but some activities are also performed
in it. Either of the two things can be done in this connection. Either the
classroom converted into social studies laboratory or a separate laboratory
5
can be provided for it.
2. Wastage of the hard work of the teacher: The teacher draws some sketches
on the blackboard with a good deal of skill and labour, but as soon as the
period is over and the teacher leaves the classroom, another teacher enters
the class, rubs off all the hard work put in by previous teacher. If the teacher
had a separate social studies room, in that case he could have kept these
pictures and sketches safely in it and would have used them at the time of
need.
3. Creation of congenial environment and atmosphere: It will have to be
admitted that environment and atmosphere play a very prominent part in the
teaching learning process. A social studies room is more attractive than an
ordinary classroom with bare walls without any decoration.
4. To safeguard costly equipment: There are certain equipments like
epidiascope etc. are very costly. They must be kept in lock and key. It is
responsibility of the teacher to keep them safe and secure for which he can
seek the co-operation of the students.
5. Inculcates the spirit of pride and seriousness among the students: If there is a
separate room, in the teaching of social studies, it will inculcate in the spirit
6
of pride and seriousness among the students.
6. Draws proper attention of the students: Social studies room can develop
proper attitudes among students. E.g. they will become more serious in their
attitudes towards work.
7. Teaching become more effective: Teaching can be more effective only if all
equipments needed for its teaching are available and these are organized in
such a manner that these are easily located and after use put pack at its
proper place.
8. Helpful in proper classification: The subject of social studies comprises
many subjects as History, Geography, Political science and Economics etc.
A permanent base in the form of social science room will help in keeping the
material in proper classification.
SIGNIFICANCE OF A SOCIAL STUDIES ROOM
In ancient times while making classrooms, the needs of the students
were not taken into account. Therefore, the rooms were generally small size.
But due to explosion in the number of students, proper sitting arrangements
are not possible in such type of rooms. Therefore, the first things that must
be taken into account while constructing a social studies room is that it must
be large size.
The area of this room must be between 1200 and 1600 square feet. It
should be a room where equipment can be kept on one side and 50 to 60
students can be accommodated on the other side. There should be two adjoin
room also along with this room. One room should be fixed for storing books
and the other for the practical work. So there should be a long table in this
room for making maps and diagrams etc. There should be some instruments
7
for making figures.
EQUIPMENTS OF THE SOCIAL STUDIES ROOM
A social studies room should be provided with the following
equipments:
1. Audio- visual materials including film strips, epidiascope, projector,
magic lantern and tape recorder
2. Bulletin boards
3. Charts and graphs
4. Text book and Reference book
5. Literary material
6. Globes
7. Map and Atlas
8. Models
9. Flag
10. Periodicals and magazines
8
11. Newspapers
12. Pamphlets published by various agencies
13. Rocks and Minerals
14. Stamps
15. Time charts and graphs
The room should be well equipped with adequate teaching equipment
so that functional environment is created and the teacher and the students are
motivated to work.
ORGANISATION OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCE ROOM
Following points should be kept in mind while organizing social science
room:
1. It is not only sufficient to collect the material, but also how to place that
material at appropriate places.
2. Arrangements for the cleanliness of room must be made. The dirty room can
be very injurious for the health of the visitors.
3. A social studies room is subject room. It should not be used for classrooms
for any other purposes.
4. Students should also be associated with the managements of the room.
Certain committees should be formed to look after various aspects of the
room.
9
CONCLUSION
Social studies room is an integral part of social studies programming
and it helps in making it as living and vital discipline. In fact, it is the
following stream of living thought. Social studies library provides suitable
opportunities to the student to use facts in a creative and productive way to
arrive at there on independent conclusions and on enable them to grow in
enriched knowledge, abilities, skills, and interests. Social studies room is the
treasure vault of the store house ideas.
