INTRODUCTION
A garden is a planned space, usually outdoors, set
aside for the display, cultivation, and enjoyment of plants and other
forms of nature. The garden can incorporate both natural and man-made
materials. The most common form today is known as a residential
garden, but the term garden has traditionally been a more general one.
Zoos, which display wild animals in simulated natural habitats, were
formerly called zoological gardens. Western gardens are almost
universally based on plants, with garden often signifying a shortened
form of botanical garden.
Some gardens are for ornamental purposes only,
while some gardens also produce food crops, sometimes in separate
areas, or sometimes intermixed with the ornamental plants. Food-
producing gardens are distinguished from farms by their smaller scale,
more labour-intensive methods, and their purpose (enjoyment of a hobby
rather than produce for sale). Flower gardens combine plants of different
heights, colours, textures, and fragrances to create interest and delight
the senses.
5
Gardening is the activity of growing and
maintaining the garden. This work is done by an amateur or professional
gardener. A gardener might also work in a non-garden setting, such as a
park, a roadside embankment, or other public space. Landscape
architecture is a related professional activity with landscape architects
tending to specialize in design for public and corporate clients.
Most gardens consist of a mix of natural
and constructed elements, although even very 'natural' gardens are
always an inherently artificial creation. Natural elements present in a
garden principally comprise flora (such as trees and weeds), fauna (such
as arthropods and birds), soil, water, air and light. Constructed elements
include paths, patios, decking, sculptures, drainage systems, lights and
buildings (such as sheds, gazebos, pergolas and follies), but also living
constructions such as flower beds, ponds and lawns.
6
A garden can have aesthetic, functional, and
recreational uses:
 Cooperation with nature
 Plant cultivation
 Observation of nature
 Bird- and insect-watching
 Reflection on the changing seasons
 Relaxation
 Children playing in the garden
 Reading and relaxing in the hammock
 Maintaining the flowerbeds
 Pottering in the shed
 Basking in warm sunshine
 Escaping oppressive sunlight and heat
ORNAMENTAL GARDEN
Ornamental gardens are specially designed areas with
plants that are designed for the purpose of aesthetic pleasure rather than
the production of crops. Landscaping plans often integrate ornamental
plants into their designs, and many cities have civic gardens for the
pleasure of residents. Some botanical gardens also include ornamental
sections which showcase striking and interesting plants as opposed to
preserving botanical specimens, which is their primary purpose.
7
The practice of laying out ornamental gardens
appears to be ancient. Humans have long had a fondness for art and
beautiful things, and once the basics of agriculture had been mastered,
landscaping was not far behind. In fact, such gardens were even included
in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, in the form of the Hanging
Gardens of Babylon, which were allegedly designed for the pleasure of a
ruler's wife.
8
Ornamental gardens often surround public buildings to
make them more visually interesting. Churches, galleries, and other
buildings devoted to contemplation are also commonly surrounded with
gardens that are used by their members. Some religions even expressly
include devotional activities which are meant to be performed in a
garden. Others are used to decorate private homes.
In addition to being pleasant to
look at, ornamental gardens are also pleasant to use. Many include
recreation areas for playing sports, walking, or simply sitting and
enjoying the garden, and some have space for performances of music
and theatre. Events like weddings and cocktail parties may also be
9
staged in an ornamental garden, with the surroundings contributing to
the decorations at the event.
VEGETABLE GARDEN
A vegetable garden (also known as a vegetable patch or
vegetable plot) is a garden that exists to grow vegetables and other
plants useful for human consumption, in contrast to a flower garden that
exists for aesthetic purposes. It is a small-scale form of vegetable
growing. A vegetable garden typically includes a compost heap, and
several plots or divided areas of land, intended to grow one or two types
of plant in each plot. Plots may also be divided into rows with an
assortment of vegetables grown in the different rows. It is usually
located to the rear of a property in the back garden or back yard. Many
families have home kitchen and vegetable gardens that they use to
produce food. In World War II, many people had a garden called a
"victory garden" which provided food and thus freed resources for the
war effort.
10
Successful vegetable gardening involves far
more than just popping a few seeds into the ground and waiting for a
tomato to appear. Planting is only the third step of the three 'P's:
Planning your garden, preparing the soil, and Planting your vegetables!
For the best success, a vegetable garden should be well
planned out in advance. The site location is of the utmost importance. A
spot near the house in full sunlight is the normally the most convenient
spot, however, drainage, soil quality, and shade from buildings or trees
may mean the garden must be located in an area farther from the house.
A good vegetable garden must have at least six hours of full sun each
day in order for your food crops to mature properly. No amount of
fertilizer, water, or care can replace needed sunshine.
The soil should be very fertile and well-draining so that
water never puddles after a rain storm. While good air movement around
a garden is important, windy areas should be avoided because winds can
dry out or break plants.
11
HERBAL GARDEN
The herb garden is often a separate space in the garden,
devoted to growing a specific group of plants known as herbs. These
gardens may be informal patches of plants, or they may be carefully
designed, even to the point of arranging and clipping the plants to form
specific patterns, as in a knot garden.
Herb gardens may be purely functional or they may
include a blend of functional and ornamental plants. The herbs are
usually used to flavor food in cooking, though they may also be used in
other ways, such as discouraging pests, providing pleasant scents, or
serving medicinal purposes (such as a physic garden), among others.
A
A kitchen garden can be created by planting different
herbs in pots or containers, with the added benefit of mobility. Although
not all herbs thrive in pots or containers, some herbs do better than
12
others. Mint, a fragrant yet invasive herb, is an example of an herb that
is advisable to keep in a container or it will take over the whole garden.
Herbs often have multiple uses. For example, mint may be
used for cooking, tea, and pest control. Examples of herbs and their uses
(not intended to be complete):
Annual culinary herbs: basil, dill, summer savory
Perennial culinary herbs: mint, rosemary, thyme, tarragon
Herbs used for potpourri: lavender, lemon verbena
Herbs used for tea: mint, lemon verbena, chamomile, bergamot, hibiscus
Herbs used for other purposes: stevia for sweetening, feverfew for pest
control in the garden.
13
CONCLUSION
Gardening is the practice of growing and cultivating plants as
part ofhorticulture. In gardens, ornamental plants are often grown for
their flowers, foliage, or overall appearance; useful plants, such as root
vegetables, leaf vegetables, fruits, and herbs, are grown for
consumption, for use as dyes, or for medicinal or cosmetic use.
Gardening is considered to be a relaxing activity for many people.
Gardening ranges in scale from fruit orchards, to
long boulevard plantings with one or more different types
of shrubs, trees, and herbaceous plants, to residential yards including
lawns and foundation plantings, to plants in large or small containers
grown inside or outside. Gardening may be very specialized, with only
one type of plant grown, or involve a large number of different plants in
mixed plantings. It involves an active participation in the growing of
plants, and tends to be labor-intensive, which differentiates it
from farming or forestry.
