Office of National Statistics (2016) • Smartphones (and apps) are the most used devices in the UK. • Adults aged 16 to 24 are most likely to engage in leisure or recreation activities, such as social networking (91%), listening to music (87%) or watching video content from sharing services (77%).

- #7: 1 - Which means that 18% DON’T!! 2 – smartphones are the most used way to access the Web. This is especially true for lower socio-economic status. This also means that most Web interaction is via apps – not a browser. This affects digital lits – v.good with social media, but poor for academic use / file storing…etc 3 – The Web as a ‘space’ for recreation, not a ‘tool’ to pick up for a purpose and put down when finished – at least for 16-34 year olds…..

- #11: We are all different – we have different socio-economic contexts, different cultural and educational backgrounds, different attitudes and behaviours, different access and opportunities. This is true ONLINE as well as offline. Therefore, we need to actively develop our digital literacies in all these areas – we need to invest in our network. We also need to remember our networking skills – GROW your network by making new connections to people info and services. – MANAGE your network by bringing value to it and maintaining and nurturing connections (this takes time, but is an investment in your network which will give you digital capital) – ACTIVATE your network when you need to achieve a learning task. Now lets find out what your PLNs look like…
- #14: Think of all the times you did any of these activities using any of the devices shown on your map Draw a line connecting the device to a GI node….like this… Try to think about the number of times you did theses things using those devices…. The more times you have used it the thicker you should make the line…
- #17: Your map should look something like this now….. What patterns can you immediately notice? More Comm&Coll than GI….. Smartphone preferable for C&C but laptop for GI….
- #21: So now you have a ‘starter’ version of your PLN, in the MOOC you’ll get a full digital version. Compare your map with your neighbour’s….and discuss the patterns you can see in them.
