Patent data from intellectual property offices around the world constitutes open data, as it is publicly disclosed information. However, patent data can be complex with many connections and classifications, making it difficult for non-professionals to utilize. Efforts are needed to amateurize patent data and make it more accessible and useful to a wider audience through principles of open data, platform design, and crowdsourcing.
