An Open Source community...
Guy + Girl Open communication Partnership You don't always get along You will have to deal with jealousy A stronger relationship in the end..
Why a community? It's the entity that drives the development of the project.
Open Source vs. Closed Source no dictatorship collaboration is a must, organizational structure develops over time quality ity of code (more pairs of eyes review the code) ‏
The Apache Software Foundation membership-based, not-for-profit corporation support for open source software projects not just a group of projects but “a community of developers and users”
The ASF History... HTTPD Server patch and fix mailing list The Apache Group In 1999, the Apache Software Foundation was born
“ Meritocracy in action.” The Apache Software Foundation
The ASF Structure Development Administrative PMC Members Board Committers Officers Contributors Members Patchers/Buggers Users
At the beginning... There were only 21 members .. and 2 “projects”: httpd and Concom All servers and services were donated
Today... 258 active members ...and 49 emeritus members 70 TLPs ~30 incubator podlings 2000+ committers (and growing!)‏
How It Works... +1, 0 and -1 mailing lists dev list users list IRC bug tracker Wiki
Perks... better coding style enhanced communication and socializing skills attend conferences for free build connections (more twitter and facebook friends!)
On the down-side... roadmap scheduling feedback takes a while (at times)‏ not much control over technology used lack of documentation
Getting Involved...
Where to start? Start with what you already know Read, read, read... Subscribe to the mailing lists Checkout the source code File bugs! Fix it and submit a patch Get involved continuously
A Few Tips... don't be intimidated always be respectful and grateful be open-minded don't take things personally take “transparency” to heart make new comers feel welcome
