This document outlines a quality improvement project to optimize resource deployment and reduce wait times in a hospital phlebotomy department. Through queuing analysis, it was determined that 4 phlebotomists were needed to meet a goal of less than 5 minute wait times. Three PDSA cycles were conducted: 1) redeploying staff but failing to improve metrics, 2) linking individual and team performance to goals which reduced variability, and 3) adjusting staffing slightly. This new process allowed the hospital to avoid hiring additional staff and save $80,000 annually in the US healthcare system.
