Overview
Gain attention of
your audience
Support your
presentation
with images
Involve your
audience in the
presentation
Talk to your
audience not at
them
Critical to initially catch the attention to your audience
by engaging them visually.
Showing video or graphic arts that relates to your topic
will draw the audience in if you are not in the same
room as they are.
Attention Gainers
At times attention getting can be too forced and disengage the
audience.
By allowing your presence to gain the attention for you can
enable your presentation to complement what you are trying to
say. (Guffey & Lowey 2011).
Attention Gaining ctd
Imagery can cause excitement and be used to establish the
conversation and presentation you are giving to an audience.
When adding images to a presentation, be careful to not go
overboard with stale and mundane images.
When using clip art is it important to be creative and let the
audience believe you are being original and engaging.
Use of Imagery
Alternative means of using
imagery could come from a variety
of sources.
Designing or creating your own
graphics can be exciting and allow
your audience to see what and
where your imagination will take
the presentation.
Imagery ctd.
This ranges in many different methods. The first can be
accomplished by encouraging audience interaction with
the presentation itself.
Asking questions and individual audience members to
read slides will force people through participation to stay
engaged with the message you are trying to get across.
Involve your Audience
Involve your Audience ctd.
• Forces people to pay attention.
• Retain information better.
Ask open ended questions
• Lets audience hear from a different voice
• People can retain information easier by reading
something themselves.
• Plan for questions. Researching outside of what
you are giving will enable you to seem more
knowledgeable.
Ask for someone to read
slides
Many presenters will just read their off their slides and
will not add personal or real world comparisons to their
subject.
Try to include personal stories or related stories to the
material presented.
Talk to your Audience
When finishing a presentation add hyperlinks or other
information pertinent that was captured within your
presentation.
Allowing future knowledge of your presentation creates
further use and learning from what you were teaching.
Colorado State Global states “analyzing the audience, and
selecting a delivery method. If you complete all these steps
carefully, they will lead you to effectively deciding what to
include in your presentation” (CSU Global 2014).
Wrapping it Up!

Editor's Notes

  • #3: When starting a presentation the firs thing you have to do is gain the audiences attention with something that supports your presentation, visually captures your audience, involves them and that you are doing it in a comfortable and relaxed manner. Guffey and Loewy write “Once you have organized your presentation and prepared visuals, you are ready to practice delivering it” (Guffey & Loewy 2011).
  • #4: Gaining the attention of your audience is critical. The presenter in some situations may not have the ability of being in the same room as their audience. Flatley writes “Although some early videoconferencing and distance learning used telecommunications technology where presenters could see the audiences at remote sites, and audiences could see the presenter” (Flatley 2007).
  • #5: By not over bearing your audience with a presentation will allow your speaking skills and style to come forward. Guffey and Loewy write “some presenters allow their PowerPoint to steal their thunder. One expert urges readers to use their Power Presence” (Guffey and Loewy 2011).
  • #6: Sir Howard Stringer was known for his successes in US Sony Operations. He had a history working for CBS and the music industry which was and can be considered his area of expertise. Hence why he focused on that primarily while working at Sony.
  • #7: Presenting images to assist in your presentation isn’t limited to pictures and clip art. Guffey and Loewy write “remember that graphics should be easy to understand” (Guffey and Loewy 2011).
  • #8: Involving your audience creates a new voice and allows for interaction between presenter and those listening.
  • #9: By creating interaction you can also mask your own deficiencies as a presenter. Colorado State Global writes “If possible, try to plan answers to possible questions that the audience may ask. Following these best practices in oral presentations will help to ensure success” (CSU Global 2014). Planning for the unexpected question will allow you to push through and not become stumped and seem unknowledgeable.
  • #10: Putting a personal touch on your presentation also shows the human side to the presenter and will add more involvement for participation. Guffey and Loewy write “choose them with care so the visual delivery of your presentation does not distract from the visual message of your presentation” (Guffey and Loewy 2011).
