Use Cases
Natural Disasters Accurate Weather Prediction Business Trends Assessment
During natural disasters you can rapidly
analyze downlinked imagery data to
identify survivors, assess structural
damages, and immediately stream this
data to first responders and rescue teams.
You can apply analytics and machine
learning to this data to identify the safest
exit routes and best locations for
temporary shelters and emergency
medical facilities.
You can use the AWS Cloud to analyze
downlinked weather data from all over the
world to more accurately predict weather
patterns. This can be used to help ships,
airplanes, trucks and people increase their
awareness of inclement weather in their
area and then safely and efficiently avoid
dangerous situations.
You can use radar satellite imagery of your
various business facilities such as parking
lots, logistic centers, and retail stores to
autonomously measure cars, traffic and
customer flow patterns, even when its
dark or cloudy weather conditions.You can
combine this with other AWS services like
analytics and machine learning, along with
time of day and weather conditions, to
assess business and operational trends in
real-time. These insights can be
immediately streamed to relevant
business analysts and decision makers
anywhere in the world.

Editor's Notes

  • #4: Customers currently have three options for communicating with their satellites: (1) build ground antennas, (2) obtain long-term leases on ground antennas, or (3) purchase excess bandwidth from existing ground stations (similar to Amazon EC2 Spot Instances Pricing).
  • #6: AWS Ground Station is a self-service, managed, ground station solution that will enable customers to communicate with satellites from 12 locations around the globe. Customers can schedule AWS Ground Station antennas on a per minute basis and pay only for their scheduled time. When using AWS Ground Station, customers can downlink data from their satellites, monitor their satellites’ health and status, and uplink commands to their satellites from their AWS console or APIs. AWS Ground Station makes it easy for customers to download data and control their satellites without building any ground station infrastructure. Downlinking data directly to an antenna in close proximity to AWS regions, minimizes latency and provides access to data rapidly. AWS Ground Station enables customers to save CAPEX and OPEX while taking advantage of the scalability, reliability, and services offered by AWS. Notes: Data can also be passed to the customer’s preferred data center or cloud vendor depending on requirements. We are also exploring ground station locations based on customer demand independent of data center location. These will be directly linked to nearby data centers still offering the benefit of low data latency.
  • #8: AWS Ground Station architecture. End users reserve a “contact” period, when their satellite will be passing over a specific ground station, through a custom API or the AWS management system. During that “contact” period the satellite will connect to AWS Ground Station in order to downlink data or command a satellite (uplink).
